Let’s talk about the Miami Dolphins

Headed down to a familiar location for the Florida heat and a highly formidable opponent.

The Dolphins have a great defense, a mediocre at best offense. Not all that different from Denver really, but coached better.

A win would clinch the AFCW for the 5th straight season, so there is some added importance. Of course we are on Pittsburgh’s heels, too.

I think we all aren’t totally sure what to make of the team at this point. They’ve been inconsistent in their focus, their execution. There seem to be problem areas that could be upgraded by simply plugging a backup in (hi, Wis), but it remains to be seen if any changes are going to be made.

It’s a weird league where outcomes are all over the place, winning is really damn hard, but they’re still 11-1 and largely look to be on cruise control half the time. I do think there’s something to be said for the GS Warriors comparison where sometimes they just don’t flip the switch until they have to. I guess we will see what happens as the games get bigger and bigger for this team.

This one won’t be easy, but if the offense comes out locked in from the go, it shouldn’t be a scare. I also think it’s another opportunity for the defense to perform well again, but I still feel like we need more from our pass rush along the DL moving forward.

If Matthieu is out, I’d assume we’d see more of Fenton and Sneed would play a little bit more of a safety role.

Maybe I'm not thinking clearly, but I'm guessing that we see Fenton in at SS or some Safety role, with Snead playing nickel/slot?

I don't know why we wouldn't just see more of Thornhill/Sorenson playing traditional safety roles while Sneed/Fenton work the slot/underneath.

Thornhill is still on a snap count, coming back from his injury.

And as much as we all love Sorenson, having him back there for the entire game isn't ideal.

I've not seen where Thornhill is on any kind of snap count due to coming back from his knee injury. He played a shit ton earlier in the season.

He hasn't been playing much lately because Sneed came back allowing HB to not have to be in the slot and because he has struggled tackling and in coverage and Sorenson has outplayed him.

We wouldn’t be asking these questions if two elements were in play:

If the Chiefs hadn’t already played Thornhill a ton of reps after he returned from a torn ACL suffered last season.
If the Chiefs defense was smothering the Raiders without Thornhill on the field.
Instead, the Chiefs brought Thornhill back during the preseason and worked him in during the first and second game of the season. He went from playing 68 percent of defensive snaps in Week 1 to playing 99 percent in Week 2. In fact, from Week 2 to Week 6, Thornhill never played less than 97 percent of the Chiefs defensive snaps. Yet in Week 7 against the Denver Broncos, something changed. Here’s a closer look:

Week 1: 38 snaps (64%)
Week 2: 82 (99%)
Week 3: 56 (100%)
Week 4: 73 (97%)
Week 5: 69 (99%)
Week 6: 55 (100%)
Week 7: 52 (68%)
Week 8: 48 (84%)
Week 9: 67 (81%)
Week 11 (Raiders): 11 (19%)


After the game, Chiefs reporters asked head coach Andy Reid about the decreased reps given to Thornhill.

He isn't 100% whether its mental or physical, but he isn't on a snap count. Nor has he been as evidence of the games he was playing 97-100% of the defensive snaps. I didn't realize they had cut his playing time weeks before Sneed came back as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Miami's o-line one of the worst? I'm hoping we see a lot moe pressure this week from the D including some more production from Clark & Jones.

They have three rookies starting on OL. They have not been consistent. Particularly run-blocking.

The refs will probably let them Bear Hug Clark all game with no whistles to keep the game close again.

I think we will see one of the worst called games of the year until we play the Chargers.

We better. Devante Parker is basically the only reliably good player they have on offense. No reason we shouldn't dominate them defensively.
