Waitresses make very little off of there paychecks at sitdown resturants They reley on there tips more then there paychecks.

what am I missing here?

now dealers at a casino you should tip, but what about the cashier? they always have a tip jar but why do they deserve a tip?
I've never understood why one should tip a dealer at a casino.

I play a lot of craps and I tip the dealer if they are friendly, if I am winnng, and if they keep order at the table. When I tip the dealer I place a bet for them the same as mine so that way we are in the same boat. Tipping the dealer in craps can help with all the chaos, most dealers will remember the bets you are making and will make the process smoother or will remind you if you haven't made a bet that you've been making all night. Similar to a bartender remembering what your drink is.

Why don't we all just start walking around handing dollars to anyone who crosses our path? "Thanks for the smile, buddy, really made my day!"
I won't do that.

I will, however, happily tip the cop that finally arrests your dumbass for DUI.

This has probably already been said, but I haven't read all 112 comments ... but, the greatest scam is the tip jar at Starbucks, after paying $4.00 for a coffee. THAT is hilarious.

Of course. I also tip at sonics (not 20 dollars), pizza delivery dude.
As well as waiters/waitress.

I'm not going to put money into a tip jar if no service has been preformed.

Were you profiled? Or do you stiff people and return to the same restaurant? As a rule, if you stiff a server, for whatever reason, the rest of the staff will know all about it and you aren't likely to ever get good service unless you wait out the staffing turnover. Not saying it's fair, especially the profiling bit, but it happens.

edit-
whoops, by no means did I mean to call you cheap, just that the server thought you were and added the auto-grat.

It's pretty much standard at resturants around here. I usually tip 15-25% depending upon service.

Why is it though that servers feel that since the mandatory tip is in place they don't have to work nearly as hard? We had one instance where we went into a resturaunt, were put in the back room and forgotten once the order was placed. We were having to go thourgh the regular serving area and and back behind the counter to refil our own drinks because the waitress was nowhere to be found. When the order came out (which took forever), parts were wrong, most was cold, she even slipped and said she had forgotten we were back there. She must have forgotten again after the meals were delivered because we didn't see her again until the tickets came - we didn't even see her in the main section as we continued to fill our own drinks too. Then, when she dilivered the tickets, there was the 15% tacked on.

It isn't uncommon for families from the church to go out after services, and it also isn't uncommon for there to be $25-$50 put down at a pizza joint in tips or $50 to $75 or more put down at a regular resturaunt when service is good. To me that isn't too bad of pay for an hour's worth of work, even if we do take up their whole section.

Unfortunately, because the perception is most big parties from churches don't tip or tip like crap and ran your butt off in the meanwhile. So do the math... run like hell for peanuts or take it easy and take care of the folks who statistically are gonna tip you and tip you well.
