PFT: Unhappy with Chiefs, Houston hopes to attract an offer sheet

Quote:
Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk

It’s highly unusual for franchise players to be signed to offer sheets, because teams regard any unused first-round picks as potential Hall of Fame players. Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston could become the exception, for various reasons.

First, he enters the process after completing a 22-sack season. No player with that kind of performance has been available on the heels of it, with or without compensation.

Second, he’s motivated to move on. Per multiple sources, Houston is very upset with the Chiefs. It’s believed that he’ll actively solicit an offer sheet in the hopes the Chiefs won’t match it.

How many players have we managed to piss off over the years? Maybe it's just because you don't hear as much about a team you're not a fan of but it seems like a number of players have felt offended by the Chiefs' offer to them or their overall treatment by the club.

Chance that we end up losing both Houston and Hudson within a year from now? I'm putting the over/under at 75%.

I'm not going to piss on KC right now because Houston did hold out when he was drafted in round 3. He's like Revis. First chance he can hold out he will.

No way to tell if this is simply posturing or if either side is being unreasonable.

Reasonable or not, we may expect a player to be "upset" because a team isn't proposing a contract he feels he is worth, or has earned.

The player is supposed to ask for more than he is worth.

The team is supposed to ask for what is less or what is reasonable, and then they negotiate. Or they'll always be fielding sucky teams or having trouble with cap space.

"Reasonable" can also have to do with trying to sign enough players to have a competitive team within the salary cap restraints. If a player can't figure that out, let him go and start his own team.

Hmmm.

There isn't a single team in the NFL that will give up two first round picks and $15 million plus per year for Justin Houston.

He has the dumbest agent in all of sports.

Still has the fallback of just signing the franchise tender though. Lot of dumb teams out there but they tend to be the ones drafting higher that wouldn't give up the picks.

And if he signs the tender and doesn't show until Week 10, how many teams will be motivated to give him a huge contract in 2016 when he played less than half a season and is a year older?

Despite what the internet wants people to believe, Houston is at a disadvantage in this situation.

I think of all things the week 10 part is a total bluff. If his plans to get some team to sign an offer sheet or get KC to sign him to whatever he is looking for don't work out he signs the franchise tender and misses part of camp. We really have no idea what he is really looking for vs. KC offering at this point so agree with your sentiment that its way too early to get worked up about this.

Dan Williams called Carl Peterson's bluff, sat out a whole year, then was rewarded with a fat contract and quickly sucked again.

Let's just hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Just to clarify something...

If he signs his tender, he's not going to be holding out. What we're talking about here is a guy who refuses to sign the tender until week 10.

Just when you think someone has the dumbest agent in sports, along comes an even dumber GM.

I'm not so sure someone won't play chicken with the Chiefs to either get Houston for just a smidge over our contract or force the Chiefs to pay up.

If I was a team and the top draft pick was Eric Fisher, I'd give that shit up so fast it would make your head spin.

Problem is that this draft is pretty strong at pass rusher. Teams probably don't feel the need to give up that kind of comp for Houston. If they need a pass rusher, they can just draft one.
