He's not Cassel, he's Deberg.

at least, I'd say that's his floor. Either way, it's not good enough to go the distance, which is what we're all pissed about, right?

I assume that Reid thinks he can take Smith to the next level, and perhaps he can. Let's be really clear about the 9'er offense: Kaepernick flourishes for a few physical reasons, and as a centerpiece of the read-option. Smith, being a traditional pocket passer, just ran the normal NFL style offense there. Yes, they ran the ball and played defense-they still do that with Kaepernick. Yes he gets more yardage as the defense has to play him differently. He's also a freak athlete and runs for a lot of yards.

My point is that it's possible Reid CAN get more production out of Smith. It also seems that Reid and Dorsey are unimpressed with Geno and the rest of the possible first round crew. Maybe not though. Maybe they've got a trade down plan in place and have possible partners in line.

The thing that bothers me the most is if they really did give up a #2 and not just swap #2's then we lose the opportunity for a Nassib/Emanuel/Dysert type project. Possibly even a shot at Barkley, who might fall due to the injury.

Bullshit. DeBerg was gritty as Hell and played through injuries. Smith is an injury waiting to happen. Short of still drafting Geno this move is abyssmal.

I don't know what the definition of "benefited the team" means since I consider this particular era a failure, but lots of Chiefs fans seem to hold a soft spot in their hearts for Trent Green. That was a really unpopular move because it cost us a first rounder to get a guy who had one decent year in Washington, one good pre-season in St Louis, and was nearing 30. And it came on the heels of us having to give up 2nd and 3rd rounders so that Carl could hire Vermeil away from the Lambs.

Green was good for a few years, and it got us a 13-3, divisional round exit again, so if you liked that era, that move could be defined as "benefited the team", especially since the guy the Lambs took with that pick became a bust I believe. Still, we didn't win any playoff games and had a horrid defense, so I wasn't a fan of that regime...

The thing about Brees tho, his last couple seasons in SD as a qb were damn good, after 2 seasons he already was a decent td:int ratio, very few sacks, 200+ yards per game......this all after only about 30 games.

Alex smith has played what......75 games? has three 300 yard games....., only cracked 200 YPG two seasons and (take note of this)....his 'good' seasons were NOT the season he broke 200 ypg.....Everyone points to 2012 and 2011.......but honestly, he was just pulling a '10 Cassel....175 ypg , dink/dunk/garbage yards.

Yes, Brees did explode when he went to NO, but he had a bomb & timer......

I see no explosion happening with Alex Smith...

Comparing the two is ridiculous IMO (so I am agreing with Hamas' original point)

Once Rex Grossman made the SB, it made me a believer that ANY QB can make it.

Bruce Gradkowski has a chance.

You want the Cardinals baseball analogy for Alex Smith. Its Kyle Lohse. It would be like say the Royals traded Wil Myers for Kyle Lohse to be their ace.

The Hunt family doesn't want to draft a QB, and it is ****ing obvious as hell. They are the common denominator since 1960, and haven't allowed it since 1983 when the barrel was full of fish and they pulled out a boot.

So if the defense could have made the Colts punt just one time, you would have liked the Trent Green era?

I can see Smith taking on a Trent Green role, accurate and quick short-medium passer, excellent in play action, and decent game awareness. The problem for the Chiefs was they they did nothing to develop a long-term QB solution during the Trent Green era.

Except Smith sucks at the short to intermediate routes. He's good at the check downs and dump offs, though, so he has that going for him.

The ****ed up thing about all of this is we still have no idea what we have in Stanzi. 2-14 season, with the worse of the worst quarterback play and we can't even get a second year player in to evaluate him.

So if there's any hope for Alex, it's that he will be accurate in the intermediate range.

2011/2012 Alex Smith 11-20 yards (24 games): 66-120 (55%), 1,162 yards, 17.6 YPC 6 TD 6 INT, 2.75 completions per game.

2010 Matt Cassel 11-20 yards: 59-113 (52.2%), 1,082 yards, 18.3 YPC, 9 TD 3 INT, 3.9 completions per game

I see a QB who not only threw the ball intermediate LESS than Cassel, but completed less pass passes by far and also turned the ball over more in that range.
