Putting aside the keep Orton option, which I'd agree the Chiefs should have done, what does ChiefsPlanet say Pioli should have done with the QB position? Clearly Sanchez is NOT an answer either, so Pioli made the right move in not spending a high 1st round pick on him. I'm also not aware of any Drew Brees to Miami level screw ups in terms of QB options that were ignored.

So what realistic move should Pioli have made, but didn't, at the QB position that pisses everybody off so much?

Heck, someone on here (GoChiefs) had a link on a post I saw explaining why Pioli should be fired, and the discussion of all the options he had other than Cassel were really pretty pathetic.
Have not read the entire thread yet, but off of the top of my head, Pioli could have done one of the following this offseason: (in no particular order or priority, any one of them would have been better than Cassel)

1. Obligatory "Sign Peyton Manning" suggestion.
2. Take Brandon Wheedon in second round.
3. Take Russell Wilson in the third round.
4. Trade up for Luck, RGIII, or Tannehill.
5. Sign Matt Flynn as a Free Agent.

That is just off of the top of my head. Option 1 may or may not have been tried, Option 4 was probably not going to happen with either Luck or RGIII, but was certainly possible for Tannehill. The Chiefs were in prime position to do options 2,3, or 5 without having to give up draft picks.

Sounds like many (the rational ones anyway) fault Pioli more for not having a backup plan for a guy who obviously didn't have much of a track record, and most importantly sticking with the guy when the performance was unacceptable after a few years. In other words not owning up to it being a mistake when the evidence became pretty clear.

Which is all I was really asking. Those who thought I was trying to defend Pioli have it wrong. First, if I try I'm just going to piss everyone off (see this thread), second, Pili will succeed or fail on his own. I'm not here to convince anybody of anything. I thought getting Cassel wasn't that bad a move in 2009 given the other options available at the time, but it sounds like the real crime in the eyes of most was sticking to a failed plan.

You are missing the main source for why everyone is irate with Fat Scott.

He has stubbornly tried to create the so called "Patriots Way" in KC, while ignoring the most basic premise of the "Patriots Way" which is the fact it is built on having a great franchise QB (Tom Brady).

Fat Scott has also tried to create a North Korea-type organization where candy wrappers on the floor are a bigger priority than winning championships.

Fat Scott has been given 4 years in KC to implement his way... he has failed.

Obviously you are too saturated with Bill Belichick's semen to see the realities of the situation here.

Cassel is a minor issue in my opinion of Pioli.

The real problem is, we thought we hired Da Vinci, and he keeps giving us Crayola paint-by-numbers replicas of the Mona Lisa to hang in the gallery.

Pioli doesn't know how to build a football team, he's just a guy that's seen it done. He hasn't taken what he's learned and tried to apply that knowledge to the curves he faces in his new situation. Instead, he's taken an inflexible straight line, regardless of where that takes the team.

He's failed in nearly every major decision he's made in KC. There are almost zero great GM moves, a lump of mediocre moves, and a crushing avalanche of terrible moves.

Pioli is a fraud.

Pioli drafts all of these supposed high character players, yet there are no team leaders and they've been blown out of so many games the last few years it isn't funny. Where is the pride and leadership?

His biggest downfall is not hiring a legit HC in two tries. You can argue that no "great" QB fell into his lap or was available for drafting, but he had plenty of real good coaching candidates available that would have provided this team with leadership and direction and probably the guts to bench Cassel when needed, and he didn't go out and get one either time...

Pioli needs to take lessons from Mike Shanahan, without a franchise QB everything else is futile. By mid-season last year it was obvious Cassel was the wrong guy. Quinn should have been the starter the day he arrived.

If Pioli had learned a lesson Quinn wouldn't have been the one to arrive in the first place.

Yeah, but Shanarat also burned through guys like Griese, Jake the Snake, Grossman, and John Beck. Cutler and RG3 happened after he wasted time on those guys...

1999-2005 before he drafted Cutler. 4 years of Griese and a little less than 4 years of Plummer before Cutler hit the field...
