Dorsey said last week he’s already had contact with several teams about trades, though he also made it clear that this was simply him doing due diligence.

“I think you call all 31 (other) teams and you let them know that if something happens you’d like to move up or if you’d like to move down,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey said those preliminary discussions with other clubs are both customary and necessary, so that both sides aren’t starting from ground zero if there’s mutual interest and things unfold a certain way during the draft.

“You’re actively setting some limits with other teams in terms of, ‘are you willing to trade up’ or ‘are you willing to trade back,’ ” Dorsey said. “That’s why you do the leg work now, so that it helps you on that draft day.”

If things do shake out a certain way on draft day, and Dorsey finds himself in negotiations for a move up or down, chances are he and the team he is trading with will turn to trade value charts to help ease the process along.

“There’s a couple of different trade charts around, and it’s based off a point scale,” Dorsey said. “They’re good and they can kind of guide and direct you in terms of value.”

Dorsey said the Chiefs use three different trade value charts, but they have also used a handful of employees, including pro and college personnel analyst Brett Veach and statistical analysis coordinator Mike Frazier, who helped keep the charts up-to-date using analytical means.

“I think those guys are invaluable because they give you a different look in terms of studying the NFL,” Dorsey said.

Doesn't matter who blocks for him. He's going to overlook wide open receivers and try to scramble like Kaepernick does except for the fact that he's not nearly as fast and not nearly as solidly built.

I'm going to leave this final prediction here. I'm not being a troll, I just have a bad feeling about this draft. I think we stay put @ 23. We will try to trade, but we won't get it done. Our draft pick won't be sexy and this board will go bat shit crazy.

The Chiefs make an asinine, head-scratching pick. The initial reaction is:

Then someone will attempt to rationalize the terrible selection, because Chiefs.

Ryan Sims and Glenn Dorsey were the consensus best DTs on the board.

Nobody bitched about those picks immediately and the rationalization only started after they had started playing.

Report about Denver making sense for trading up for bortles

Citing Peter King's mention of teams with QBs in their 30s possibly trading up for Blake Bortles, The MMQB's Greg A Bedard suggested the Broncos make some sense.
"Would be perfect Aaron Rodgers-like situation. Gives Bortles one, probably two years to get the work he needs to be a starter," Bedard tweeted. Our own Josh Norris mock the Broncos moving up with Miami at No. 19 to leapfrog the Cardinals to select Bortles. We have not forgotten about Brock Osweiler (contract is up after 2015), and understand the team's window to win might be short, but the fifth-year option and possible build similarities to Elway make it intriguing.

I wouldn't be in all honesty. I'd be glad of the trade back as long as it allowed us to gain at least 1 extra pick in the top 100 so we end up with 3 top 100 picks in this draft.

If we had a pick in the 40-55 range with two in the 70-90 range, that would already be a huge win for me.

You're looking at players with 1st round grades likely still being available at 40-55 and players with 2nd round grades in any other draft likely still there at 70-90.

That means roughy one 1st round talent and two 2nd round talents.

http://static.gamespot.com/uploads/original/363/3632305/2507823-4833755599-RobRy.gif

Hell, I'd even be fine if the extra pick was a top 120 pick.

Why Not?

JOEL BITONIO, OG, NEVADA
Joel Bitonio | Nevada Wolfpack

Scouting Report

In less than a year the Chiefs went from the worst team in the league to one of the best. It’s amazing what the addition of a competent head coach and quarterback can do for a franchise. However, after going undefeated through the first couple months of the season they tailed off down the stretch leaving no doubt that there are still some issues to iron out. Kansas City lost Branden Albert in free agency but still have an impressive set of young bookends in Eric Fisher and Donald Stephenson. They weren’t as well equipped to withstand the losses of Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz on the interior though. A hallmark of Andy Reid’s tenure in Philly was a tendency to address the offensive and defensive lines in the early rounds of the NFL Draft. So far that has continued in Kansas City, where they used the #1 overall pick on Fisher a year ago. Joel Bitonio of Nevada played tackle in college but will likely kick inside to guard as a pro. An aggressive blocker with good athleticism and top-notch intangibles, Bitonio is capable of seeing action all along the line. Perhaps the most impressive thing about Bitonio is the passion, intensity and mean streak that he consistently displays. Xavier Su’a-Filo of UCLA is also in the running to be the first guard off the board. There isn’t much to get excited about at wide receiver beyond Dwayne Bowe so that is another strong possibility, with Marqise Lee of USC and Brandin Cooks of Oregon St. being the most likely options. Reinforcements are needed in the secondary as well so watch out for a safety like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix of Alabama or Calvin Pryor of Louisville to team Eric Berry or perhaps even a cornerback such as Bradley Roby of Ohio St. or Jason Verrett of T.C.U. since Joel Bitonio | Nevada Wolfpack Brandon Flowers is reportedly on the trading block. With Tyson Jackson moving on in free agency they could look to Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt or Minnesota DE Ra’Shede Hageman as a replacement at the five-technique. While not a pressing need it will soon be time to start looking for an edge pass rusher at outside linebacker to eventually replace Tamba Hali, who makes a lot of money and is getting up there in years. Kony Ealy of Missouri, Dee Ford of Auburn and Demarcus Lawrence of Boise St could all be targets there.

Source: Greg A Bedard on Twitter May 8 - 11:42 AM

No way this happens. They're drafting to win now, and no way is a qb on the bench doing that. And HorseMouth would have to admit he was wrong with Osweiler.

23. Kansas City Chiefs

The Pick: QB Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville

My No. 1 overall player sees his draft-day fall end. Teddy Bridgewater to the Kansas City Chiefs? It makes more sense than you might initially think.

Alex Smith, acquired last year for a second-round draft pick, has his contract expire after the 2014 season. He'll be 31 years old at that time. Smith is who he is—a good quarterback in limiting risk, but not a big-play passer. Bridgewater has the potential to be a big upgrade.

With Smith's future in question, now is the time for the Chiefs to pull the trigger (finally) on a first-round quarterback. No more trades for backups and retreads. Go get your guy, Andy Reid.

Considering the fact that it's the primary reason why we lost in the playoff game last season, I don't think that there are more pressing needs than fixing our damn secondary.

Before the season began in 2013, even after signing Sean Smith, I thought that our secondary was going to be an issue. While they played pretty well early in the season, the issues that we had reared its ugly head in the second half of the season and ultimately ended our year for us.

Sure we could use another WR, but an extra 500 yards in the passing game from that player with maybe 3-4 more TDs over what McCluster brought us last year isn't going to fix the fact that both Denver and San Diego will still rail our secondary come game day. We have done next to nothing to improve it during the off-season so far.

Our wide receivers and QB aren't the reason why we lost that playoff game.

Cooper showed promise, yes. I won't say the same for Parker yet, way too small of a sample size.

As for WR, we still have Bowe who is a lot better at his job than any of our DBs, save Eric Berry, are at theirs. While not spectacular, our Wrs still played better in the playoff game than much of our secondary did. In Reid's system, you don't have to have superstars everywhere at WR; you can do just fine with just decent players. Does it help to have dominant weapons? Certainly, but Alex Smith spreads the ball around to whatever is open which significantly reduces the need for a 80+ receptions type of WR. He isn't dependent upon any one WR to be a dominant force, and neither is Reid.

On the flip side, Sutton's defense it's all but required that you have at least above average players across the board in coverage. That's the great flaw of a man cover scheme; it's going to fail if you don't have the athletes who can handle it. At the moment all Sutton has to work with is a couple of average CBs and one 7th round developmental prospect who showed a lot of promise. This is on a defense that absolutely needs at least 1 great CB who is fully capable of shadowing and limiting the production of opposing #1 WRs. Right now Sutton doesn't have that piece.

It hurts even more because he also doesn't have the competent deep FS that he needs to cover up for the mistakes of our subpar corners.

Hahaha what? Bowe fucking sucked.

Sutton's defense is required that you generate pressure. Why did Jeff Tuel have moments of absolute brilliance on the game against Buffalo? They got no fucking pressure on him.

It's a really easy concept.

You can't generate pressure if the QB can release the ball in 1.5 seconds every time.

Late in the season, Sutton tried pulling the CBs out of press because it wasn't working and that didn't work either.

Again, our CBs couldn't even cover their Wrs for longer than 2 seconds. You expect Hali and Houston to get to the QB in that amount of time? Hell, against the Broncos, the Wrs were open almost instantly from the snap of the ball on virtually every single passing play. You could have Lawrence Taylor and Derrick Thomas rushing the passer and they still wouldn't have gotten there before Manning could release the ball to the open receiver.

Terez Paylor's final mock:

Lee is gone, but Cooks is available, and:
23. Kansas City Chiefs: OG Xavier Su’a-Filo, 6-4, 307, UCLA

The Chiefs have a number of holes to fill so they have a chance to take the best player available. I had Marqise Lee going here in my final mock draft, which ran in today’s Star, but this is my final final mock, and in this one, Lee is off the board.

So let’s take a look at the number of other players in contention at this spot, which, in my opinion, include receiver Brandin Cooks, tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, guard Xavier Su’a-Filo, defensive tackle Stephon Tuitt, outside linebacker Dee Ford and cornerbacks Bradley Roby and Kyle Fuller.

This is a deep draft for receivers, so with Lee off the board, perhaps they wait to fill that hole in the mid rounds. Cooks played outside in college and has good hands, but Chiefs general manager John Dorsey might hesitate to take such a small receiver in the first round. Dark-horse receiver candidates include Vanderbilt’s Jordan Matthews and Indiana’s Cody Latimer.

At tight end, Seferian-Jenkins could easily team up with last year’s third-round pick, Travis Kelce, to form a devastating duo over the middle. Don’t worry about having too many tight ends — Reid is creative enough to make it work.

Su’a-Filo, a guard with experience at tackle, needs to get stronger but has good athleticism and projects as a very good zone run blocker in the NFL. It’s not a sexy pick, but after Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz left via free agency, he could step right in and grow next to right tackle Donald Stephenson.

Tuitt is a big of longshot, due to the fact the Chiefs already have some intriguing down linemen in Dontari Poe, Vance Walker and Mike DeVito, and drafting Tuitt essentially one of the latter two. He’s also been banged up all year. But he’s a prototype five-technique end who is a perfect fit in their scheme and also has pass-rush ability.

Outside linebacker Dee Ford is also a bit of a long shot, though he’s a gifted pass rusher and a good fit coming off the edge. But Ford has durability concerns and lacks bulk, which means he could be limited to a pass-rushing role unless he gets stronger. His durability concerns also mean you’d probably be more comfortable taking him in he second round.

After watching teams like the Chargers and Broncos throw it over their heads last season, the Chiefs need to add more speed to the cornerback position. Fuller and Roby have that and ball skills, but they each have their warts. There’s some disagreement about Fuller’s man-cover skills, while Roby’s inconsistency last season was troubling.

In the end, given Reid and Dorsey’s proclivity for taking linemen in the first round, the safest pick is Su’a-Filo, who will help solidify a line with lots of young talent for years to come. I’m tempted to go with Seferian-Jenkins — the desire for another plug-and-play playmaker is very real — but I’ll play it safe.
