I love how Albert misses 9 games out of a possible 96 in his 6 years here, and people are making him out as the second coming of Tony Moeaki or Brodie Croyle.
Most of this board severely underestimates the drop off from a Top 10 LT to essentially a rookie, who couldn't handle the opposition's 2nd best pass rusher last year and is going to face the best of the best this year. |

This FO is banking on the young guys stepping in and improving this team. They'll either look like geniuses or fail like everyone before them has. It is what it is...

It will be a minor miracle if the Chiefs season in 2014 is anything but a complete disaster.

Let's see:
Albert sucked. - Technically one of the worst offensive tackles in the league. Led the team in untimely, dive killing penalties, minor injuries that would destroy the offensive rhythm and seemed to enjoy using the field as a matress as he was laying on it horizontally as much as he was blocking. Replaced by: Eric Fisher, who already has infinitely more skills for the position than Albert has. Asamoah sucked. - Was as good in his fourth season as he was in his rookie season. Couldn't get out of his stance quick enough and was a virtual sieve. Replaced by: Eric Kush or Rokevious Watkins. Both of whom couldn't be any worse than Asamoah. McCluster sucked. - Slow, short and drops passes like the football was on fire. One decent season as a PR/slot guy. Yawn. Replaced by: Weston Dressler, who is the exact same guy as McCluster with better hands. Jackson sucked. - Everybody around here for four years has bitched about this guy wasting a roster spot. Replaced by: Vance Walker, who is a much better pass rusher from the five tech spot. The one guy we lost that everyone laments was Schwartz, who is on his fourth team in four years and wasn't good enough to beat that tomato can Asamoah out of a job until he got injured. He was replaced by the identical Jeff Linkenbach. Wash. The team did not waste any money on any of the over priced, injured, aging locker room cancer type players that typically populate the free agent market. Addition by subtraction. Didn't have to piss anyway any excessive monies in order to keep marginal level players on the roster. Chiefs Free Agency Offseason Grade: A+ |

If we decided that all those guys weren't good enough then we should have replaced them in free agency. Our backups couldn't beat all those 'sucky' guys out of their starting jobs last year but now we expect them to be better than the guys they couldn't win a job from? Regardless of how you want to spin it, last year and this year represent conflicting philosophies. Last year was a 'add talent wherever/whenever you can to win game'. This year is 'patiently build for the future and avoid spending big money on old guys'. flip-flopping between philosophies is not a good idea, it almost always ends in failure.

What they did last year was to provide a foundation for the team under a new scheme, coaching staff and front office. They needed to get players in here immediately who could provide a platform from whence to build a new team from. Alex Smith, Mike DeVito and Sean Smith were guys we had to have. Cornerstone type guys. At this point going forward, it's about team building as it should be - through the draft, getting the guys who fit your system the best, allowing them to grow as a cohesive unit and coalesce into a high level football team. Seattle, the Packers, the Eagles of the mid-Reid era all did this and this is what you are going to see now. Signing stop gap, over priced, injured guys from the free agency wire is a horrible concept to team building. Look at what happened to the Chiefs during the Vermeil years, especially on the defensive side of the ball, when this was the prime philosophy. We jettisoned four guys who were mediocre/marginal talents that really didn't fit the scheme we now have in place and they have all been replaced by guys who are, at the very worst, lateral moves. I give credit to the new Chiefs FO/coaching staff for not taking the "quick fix" route and rather building as a team should be built or overpaying for mediocrity. A+. |

Mike Devito and Sean Smith are cornerstone players.
I've officially heard it all. Sacc, May you asphyxiate on the vomitus of a carnivore.
