What should Veach accomplish this offseason?

Obviously we will try to keep OBJ and Ingram. Clark and Hitchens are probably gone.
I want Matheiu gone but I’m not sure Spags will let Veach do that. That will be interesting.

I think our #1 need has to be another receiving weapon. Mahomes went through slumps and a big part of that was the shit from Robinson and Pringle. They just aren’t good enough when Kelce and Reek are double covered.

We need to start a youth movement at DL, secondary and WR. Kelce, Jones, Ingram and Matheiu (whether he stays or goes) are starting to get old.

Basically WR, pass rush and secondary. I want Veach to attack those areas hard.

What do you think?

We don't need to "cut" a lot of people, just don't re-sign them. Here's a list of our FAs. Let's take a look at what holes we would have to fill before we start throwing money out there:

Blake Bell, tight end
Austin Blythe, offensive line
Orlando Brown Jr., offensive tackle
Michael Burton, fullback
Chad Henne, quarterback
Mike Hughes, cornerback
Melvin Ingram, pass rusher
Kyle Long, offensive line
Tyrann Mathieu, safety
Jerick McKinnon, running back
Ben Niemann, linebacker
Derrick Nnadi, defensive line
Dorian O’Daniel, linebacker
Alex Okafor, defensive end
Byron Pringle, wide receiver
Jarran Reed, defensive tackle
Mike Remmers, offensive line
Demarcus Robinson, wide receiver
Daniel Sorensen, safety
Charvarius Ward, cornerback
Armani Watts, safety
Darrel Williams, running back
Andrew Wylie, offensive line
Jody Fortson, tight end (ERFA)
Derrick Gore, running back (ERFA)
Marcus Kemp, wide receiver (RFA)
Chris Lammons, cornerback (ERFA)

I'd like to keep Bell, Burton, McKinnon, Okafor, Remmers, Ward, Fortson, Gore, and Hughes. If Brown will take less than top dollar money, keep him. Same for Ward and Ingram. Blythe, Nnadi, Pringle, and Niemann provide depth at a pretty cheap price. Sorenson and Long probably call it a career. Mathieu is going to dictate his own future. I'm opposed to giving him top dollar and a long term contract. No doubt our secondary looks like a bunch of Keystone Cops without him directing traffic, he's no spring chicken and he disappears at times. The rest are sub-JAGs and can kick rocks. We have to get rid of Clark and Hitchens.

If you can get over his fumbles, Melvin Gordon would probably be the most impactful free agent signing the Chiefs could reasonably make. He's good at everything. Can catch, block, run you over and run by you.

If the Chiefs need a quarterback on the defense like Matheiu to lead them they might be in trouble next year. Because not only has he lost a step or two but his refusal to want to tackle anyone was very apparent the second half of this season.

I’m going to be honest here. I think Veach should go ALL IN for the next 2 seasons. I’m not saying going all in like the Rams but he should be doing something.

Think about it. Kelce turns 33 this year. Tyreek and Jones turn 28. Those are 3 of your best players. They are in their prime now. Patrick is just now entering his too. You also have no idea about Andy. He’s 63 and vastly overweight. Anything could happen with him.

We’ve got an extra 3rd rd pick the next 2 years, so we have ammo. Wanna trade a 2nd for a damn good player that is young? I’m down for that. Backload the contract. Wanna use one of those 3rd rd picks to move up in the first? Alrighty.

Melvin Ingram want to come back? No prob. 2 years. Let’s go hard after Von Miller, DJ Chark, Emmanuel Ogbah. Get those guys. Maneuver the cap and backload it.

The Chiefs era we’ve seen will start looking different in 2 years. After that you clear money and pay your young studs like Sneed, Gay, Bolton, Creed, Smith.

You could probably get Von Miller AND Ingram for what we pay Clark.

Of course, going all in can make that window close faster.

Here’s where I’m at: youth movement on defense, money on offense

Trim the fat from the defense wherever possible. Even the number 1 defense gets torched in the postseason. Our best players on D this postseason were all young guys or cheap (Ingram, Reed, Gay, Bolton, Sneed, and probably Ward). I’m fine getting rid of Mathieu, Clark, Hitchens, etc and filling out the defense with rookies and 1-year contracts.

Just keep loading the offense up with weapons and give Mahomes every opportunity to succeed.

I’m going to start this post off with the reminder that it probably won’t happen.

But it should. Spags needs to go. We’re talking about bringing all these new players in and overhauling the defense. For what? So we can watch this defense suck for the first 6-8 weeks because no one knows the defense? Or to watch as the secondary ****s the football because they can’t pick up their zone responsibilities?

I think you can backload Tyreek, OBJ and Ward’s contracts. Sign someone like Marcus Williams and backload it. They are all young but Tyreek but Tyreek will probably still be really productive at 31. Those big contracts won’t start kicking in until 3 years from now except Tyreek.

Packers are in cap hell. Maybe trade a 3rd for Preston Smith who has been productive. He’s got 2 years left on his deal. Or hell have Mahomes recruit Von
Miller and piss off Denver.

We’ll still have picks guys. And after the 2023 season is over you can move on from Thuney and Jones who will be past their prime. You’ll save a shit load of money.

Chris Jones is actually a FA in 2 years. I think that was by design

You’re overthinking this.

This is a players problem. Matheiu and Clark have quit on this team. That’s on them, not Spags. You notice how this defense started playing damn good when Ingram got in the building?

This team held the Bengals to 24 points in regulation. That was with an awful Mahomes INT putting them in bad field position. Yesterday was more of an implosion on Mahomes/Andy than Spags.

And our young players. Bolton, Gay, Fenton, Sneed. Even good role players like Wharton and Danna. Veach didn’t just use his scouts to pick these guys. Spags and his staff played a big role in that.
We know for a fact that Daley wanted Danna. We know that Spags has always had a good eye for DB’s. Who did Veach draft on defense that was good before Spags? Speaks, Nnadi and O’Daniel were his picks. Yikes.

This defense sucked early this year and then wasn’t good enough at the end primarily bc Matheiu and Clark regressed badly.
