It's more than laughable. I've seen at least a dozen or more 49er games in the past two years and I've seen Alex Smith play extremely well.

It's ****ing ridiculous for people to pull up statistics of Smith and compare him to Cassel. First off, Smith has had shit for WR's for years. Crabtree really didn't emerge until this year. Davis is an elite or close to elite TE and very reliable, which is why Smith threw so many passes to him. When your other receivers are bums, what do people expect?

Keep in mind, the 49ers signed Mario Manningham and an old Randy Moss in free agency and drafted a WR in the first round of the 2012 draft. The 49ers KNEW they had issues with the WR position and while their first rounder was a dud and Manningham was injured, Alex Smith still turned in the best passer rating of 2012.

Harbaugh's guy was Kaepernick, who has a very unique skillset. If he hadn't been able to run for so many touchdowns, the 49ers wouldn't have won as many games after he replaced Smith. He's a beast to defend, no doubt. But Alex Smith isn't and never was a dual threat, which is gaining popularity in the NFL, so to suddenly claim that Smith was a "backup" is ludicrous.
