You measure greatness in championships, and Mahomes has already equaled Woodson there. Playing a long time is great. Pro Bowls and All Pros are great. League MVP and Superbowl MVP trumps all of that.

Yes and no.

If Mahomes doesn't play another down for some reason, or maybe only plays a couple more seasons and then stops for whatever reason, we'll look at his career and many will think "he was a flash in the pan." Or a one-hit wonder, whatever sounds right to you.

It wouldn't be that different from that NBA guard (can't remember his name now) that came off the bench as a rookie or a 2nd-year guy, and nearly took his team to the championship. Everyone jumped on his bandwagon for a couple years after that, but he got hurt or something and disappeared. No one looking back now is going to say "that guy was one of the greatest guards in the modern era." Because he didn't stick around long enough and play at that high level for long enough.

Woodson, on the other hand, has a 17-year career of consistent greatness to contrast/compare with any #10 pick.

Now, it won't be very long before you'll have to revisit this conversation and admit that Mahomes is the greatest 10th pick ever. 3 or 4 more years? Just not right now.

Mahomes won the NFL MVP his first season on the field, and got a team to the AFC Championship for the first time in almost 50 years. And then he won the Superbowl the next year.

He doesn't have to play another down to be one of the greatest players in NFL history. He's already a legend.

We're not comparing him to Tom Brady. We're comparing him to Rod freaking Woodson.

I'd rather have Darrell Green. And he wasn't drafted until 28.

I rank Ronnie Lott above him. Lott was an 8x First Team All Pro and had better overall numbers by playing less seasons. Lott was by far the most dominant and feared DB the league has ever seen.
