This is basic human psychology, guys. If you think it would be better for an athlete to attack a fans because they are being assholes you don't have a clue. It will only get worse.

In theory your argument is sound, but if you look at fan-athlete interactions it's pretty obvious that fans are allowed to do essentially anything because there is no penalty associated with their behavior.

I look at it this way:

I have no problem with Ron Artest going into the stands to beat the **** out of some guy who pelted him with a Diet Coke. I have a problem with him going into the stands without knowing who exactly threw it.

If someone is close enough to violate your personal space and you can see them do it, then I have little issue with retaliation.
