Just curious... If the fan called Smart a racial slur, was he justified for shoving the fan.

I think its an interesting debate about where the line should be drawn for fans to get away with jawing at players. Let's first see if there's any truth to this. My personal opinion is that sports should have leeway for fan behavior, but there's a line that fans too often cross.

If Tech had any evidence that a racial slur was said, they'd be foolish to try to cover that up. With all the technology today they have no idea if somebody has this recorded on their phone. If they back Orr based on "doctored" evidence or a shoddy investigation and then something comes out proving Orr did use a racial slur, they would look extremely stupid.

They have a vested interest in making this go away as soon as possible. Creating a race issue through the media is exactly the way you don't want to do that.

Yes, I agree, they would. That's why I found the fact that they would make a PR statement about a vague "investigation" with no details that apparently occurred fully in less than 15 hours ago pretty embarrassing.

I don't justify it, I just understand the inclination to give this guy what he probably deserved. To me, it's really the asshole with a history of taunting college athletes (and the ridiculous fan culture that allows such things to go on) that people should take issue with in this story.

I wish they would produce a menu of sorts and let the players a choice. Don't rule it out, just let them know what it'll cost them. Not only will it make the post-shove/punch process less difficult, it'll keep the fans guessing as to whether, or not, their not-so-tough body can back up their big mouth.

Like I said, the heckling is made all the worse for the repercussions for heckling being almost nil unless something like a shove happens.

You have to introduce some risk for the hecklers to get them to shut-up, snd I'm ready for having their teeth knocked down their throats being one option they know the players have (more than it being the nuclear option they've always had). Make it less nuclear and it'll actually be fun.
