*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*
Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!
No one else started it so here it is! **From the 2013 Thread** If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE: http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs If you have questions about the SS programs, look here: http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started. Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE: http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point. |

I really don't do it by the book counting cals and macros and all that stuff. I might have to do that(and cardio) to take it to the next level, but right now I have about 20 different things I keep stocked and will eat when I get hungry and I just be sure I keep the Keto Stick turning purple.

What are your 20 different things? Eating on keto for me tended to get boring after awhile. |

No one is butthurt about Crossfit. There's a difference between recognizing something as being potentially dangerous and being upset about it. There's also a supreme superiority complex that comes along with Crossfit (not saying you have it), which is severely off-putting.

People wouldn't have a problem with Crossfit if their members recognized that 1) Crossfit won't make you so awesome at everything that you can just do Crossfit and beat anyone that actually trains for something, 2) Crossfit's emphasis on time promotes a sacrifice of form on Olympic lifts which can be dangerous, as evidenced by the large numbers of people that are injured doing Crossfit, and 3) there are safer, just as time-efficient, ways to get in the "best shape of your life." There's no doubt that some gyms are good. There's no doubt that there are far more which are bad. |

For instance, I lift and also play a shitload of soccer. Do I credit the soccer for my lifting? I guess in some small way it helps me somehow. But the reality is that it's the specific, directed programming that helps my lifting more than anything else. This kind of deception isn't confined just to Crossfit, though. It's been going on in lifting circles for decades. Guys see a workout in Muscle and Fitness with a ridiculous schedule and ridiculous number of reps and follow it because the guy that made it up was FREAKING HUGE, MAN!!! But he didn't disclose that his workout only made you awesome if you're on steroids. Whoops. But guys still dutifully do the workouts, and when they don't get huge, they blame it on something else, and not the workout that was designed for a guy on 'roids. |

I find that my old school weight lifting friends have the superiority complex. They make fun of it like you guys do on here (not necessarily you) and really don't have a great handle on what we do. Meanwhile, they would regularly throw in some metcon workouts each week that could easily have been a WOD on the crossfit site. Quote:

I don't think this notion exists inside of Crossfit. One of the things I realized I needed to do was improve my squat & deadlift. They gave me specific coaching on form and encouraged me to work on those moves in addition to the WOD. They absolutely acknowledged the work I did at my other gym when those lifts started to improve

I remember one day I was working out at my "normal gym" with my buddy who is a personal trainer. Our workout included kettlebell swings and cleans and some guy came up and asked us if we were crossfitting. My buddy was so pissed I thought he was going to explode. |

So what do the strength type WOD typically look like? Does it include some sort of programming like 'work up to 80% of 1rm for 3 sets of 5' or something along those lines? |
