Pats Cheating Comfirmed

According to the report, the league sources say the NFL determined 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots were under-inflated by two pounds per square inch each. Per NFL rules, footballs are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 PSI and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

I seem to recall Plaxico getting in their head, leading to 18-1.

This is why you always trust an engineer when it comes to real world problems. (And why I asked Rainman to check my work)

Fact is, the NFL screwed up and it is unlikely we will ever know specifics here. If they want to be so precise on the footballs' PSI they need to measure temps as well, otherwise they need to shut up about it.

if the balls are inflated to 11.5 PSI does that really matter in the long run, if everyone can do it?

Why not just allow each team 12 balls like they do now and just say you cant ADD anything (sticky stuff, chemicals, etc...) but you can scuff it up or use sandpaper and water and inflate it to whatever....

I dont really see the big deal but im probably missing something
Of course you're missing something. They did it to stop fumbling and it worked incredibly well.

well you missed my question

why not just let all the teams go to 11.5 PSI

or why even have the OPTION to have a lower PSI?

why not make every team have to use the same PSI if lowering it is an advantage?

I'm guessing you're taking about the sports science video? I have a lot of issues with that video, it's pretty misleading (intentionally, imo).

They talk about travel time difference between a fully inflated ball and a deflated ball that are both released at the same velocity. Unfortunately, that's missing the point. A deflated ball will allow a better grip, which allows you to keep the same level of control with a harder throw, meaning a higher initial velocity.

It's analogous to saying that corking a bat is a disadvantage, because a corked bat has less momentum than a regular bat when they are swung at the same speed. Yet, we know that balls hit with corked bats go further. This is because corking the bat allows you to swing it faster, the premise of the argument is intentionally misleading, like the ball velocity comparison.

Also, they say something about the deflated ball only allowing 1 mm of extra deflection in grip, but don't say anything about what advantage this provides, leaving the viewer assuming that 1 mm difference is silly. However, 1 mm of extra deflection on a surface grip allows you to create significantly more friction between your hand and the ball, by changing the angle that the forces are applied at.

The entire video is filled with mis-information and half truths like that.

"I mean, it's easy to figure out who did it," Montana said after an appearance for Papa John's, via the Boston Globe. "Did Tom do it? No, but Tom likes the balls that way, obviously, or you wouldn’t have 11 of them that way without him complaining, because as a quarterback, you know how you like the ball. If it doesn’t feel like that, something is wrong."

Montana added: "If I ever want a ball a certain way, I don’t do it myself ... so, somebody did it for him."

Hey, Tom Brady likes soft balls. And why is it that Belichek happened to know the balls would drop 1.5 PSI? Because the guy is an mathematics/physics/analytics whore. Given the conditions of the game he knew he could get the soft balls Brady likes by making sure they asked for balls at the lower limit (12.5 psi), knowing they'd drop in pressure as they cooled and moistened.

All it takes is for Andrew Luck to like hard balls and ask for his filled to the upper limit, and voila.... recipe for deflategate or whatever it is called. I don't really give a ****. I don't think it matters. I honestly don't believe ball pressure gives a team some unfair competitive advantage. Hell, its my opinion that if they want to play with a ****ing pancake, let em.

That would be fine. The problem right now is that the other teams are actually following the rules.

I want someone to attach a strap and a force meter to 2 balls, one legally inflated, and one under inflated. Have the same guy try to hold onto each ball (not at the same time) and see how much force it takes to rip each one out of his hands. Would anyone assume that they wouldn't be different?

But what does that mean? It could mean the softer side of the regulation psi as opposed to the highest side.

my post was in response to another post, which was seemingly in favor of making the rules back to pre-2007

im not saying the pats arent / werent cheating

read my post and the quote..im just saying if theyre gonna change the rules, make it less likely or less probable that anyone cheats by allowing teams to get their balls the way they want...I personally dont see how it would make the game worse..thats my point...

not "the pats werent cheating"

jesus you are defensive
