Despite the common thought here that Alex Smith held down the team Sunday, Smith's overall production to the team yesterday graded out very positive in 3 rankings:
Smith: QBR 94.1, QB rating 99, PFF 71.9
Winston: QBR 83.6, QB rating 97, PFF 50.7

This is why we should use our brains instead of repeating the garbage fed to us by Mellinger and Teicher. If Smith only had 34 plays yesterday to do something with the ball and earns both a rushing and passing TD, a FG, to 1 INT (first red zone interception since 2013) and completes an outstanding 77% of passes ... we should probably focus on the real problem yesterday: The Defense. Who didn't show up and allowed Winston/Martin to hold the ball for 35 minutes, earn 24 first downs, and convert 68% of 3rd downs (league average is 40%).

Against the Bucs...

Philip Rivers: 2 INTs, 80 QB rating
Russell Wilson: 2 INTs, 39 QB rating

The team in 2016 has problems across the roster that stand in the way of guaranteeing success, but it's far from one or two, including QB, lynchpin problems.

Most of the time, the balance of the roster covers the decficits that arise. Occasionally they don't. Yesterday was a perfect storm of the skill of the opponent, our fear of the skill of the opponent, the yips in a lot of fine adjustments, and a few bad calls [refs, players, and coaches alike].

Above and beyond the 20-4 stretch, I'm not sure people have perspective on what a luxury it is to have a team that, even when it loses, beats itself.

As maddening as it is to see a mistake here and there draw everyone's testicles up, that's an eminently more fixable problem than having personnel that can take the field 10 times against x or y opponent and get reliably and demoralizingly blown off the ball.

Closest we came this year was the Steelers game, and even then it was a 22 point tsunami in 5 minutes on the road more than being outclassed whistle to whistle.

Yesterday, no QB would have made a difference. Andy feared the Titans D and their running O. Their running game gave him every reason to at every moment of the day yesterday. Their D gave us a cushion early on, but then gave him every reason to fear the rest of the game. Getting stoned umpteen times in a row on 3rd or 4th and inches will do that to any coach.

And Alex did have the INT.

But so far as 'putting the team on his shoulders,' the only time that was called for was with a 1 pt lead with 2:30 left in the game. Andy called 3 straight runs. You think he would have preferred a gunslinger 'go for the jugular' in that situation, even Brady or Rodgers? Do you think another QB would have run those 3 running plays smarter or better?

It's fine to have high expectations. It's fine to get mad over mistakes. What's not fine is to reflexively demand that something, ANYTHING ELSE would certainly be better.

The team is thoughtfully constructed and molded to compete and win. You might think your perspective gives you superior insight into the 'big picture,' but the organization's tact of forgetting yesterday, remembering it's one game fungible with all other regular season games, acknowledging that fixation on the past will never alter any of it, and preparing to maximize the performance of the roster assembled, is the proper and superior way to go.

Standing on Omaha beach is not the time to start griping that you wish Uncle Sam had given you a different gun.

Offense should be ashamed of themselves after this game. The defense gave them countless opportunities to put the game away and they blew it every single time.

They really need to step it up these last two weeks and in the playoffs otherwise we will be one-and-done.

Sometimes they look really aggressive, then others they look like they're simply trying to protect the ball and punt. It's very strange.

I just don't think Reid is particularly good at basic football scheming. Everything he does involves a lot of trickery and decoys and misdirection. Sometimes it works well. But when every play is the swinging gate, it ceases to become effective.

If I had to pick one thing, with the personnel losses we've had and the timelines of recovery they've incurred, I think Andy is severely game planning for health and survival over maximum performance.

I can't shake the mental image of Andy seeing a TE crossing play on the playsheet, then recalling DJ or JC grabbing a knee or ankle and tossing it in the flat.
