Alex Smith is a solid QB, sorry haters. Bucs win 5th game in a row.

Despite the common thought here that Alex Smith held down the team Sunday, Smith's overall production to the team yesterday graded out very positive in 3 rankings:
Smith: QBR 94.1, QB rating 99, PFF 71.9
Winston: QBR 83.6, QB rating 97, PFF 50.7

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro...-for-bucs-win/

"Smith gained positive expected points (EPA) on 77 percent of his plays on Sunday, the second-highest rate for a QB in a game this season (Dak Prescott, 83 percent versus Chicago in Week 3). Put simply, more than three-fourths of his plays contributed to the team’s scoring margin, given the context and situation." - http://www.espn.com/blog/statsinfo/p...s-excels-again

This is why we should use our brains instead of repeating the garbage fed to us by Mellinger and Teicher. If Smith only had 34 plays yesterday to do something with the ball and earns both a rushing and passing TD, a FG, to 1 INT (first red zone interception since 2013) and completes an outstanding 77% of passes ... we should probably focus on the real problem yesterday: The Defense. Who didn't show up and allowed Winston/Martin to hold the ball for 35 minutes, earn 24 first downs, and convert 68% of 3rd downs (league average is 40%).

Against the Bucs...

Alex Smith: 1 INT, 99 QB rating
Philip Rivers: 2 INTs, 80 QB rating
Russell Wilson: 2 INTs, 39 QB rating
Drew Brees: 3 INTs, 49 QB rating

Yeah, no doubt.

Which brings my thoughts back to retirement Alex. Perhaps this is part of why Smith seems so lax. Perhaps this is why he doesn't bother running as much.

Maybe he is seeing his HC's flaws, and is thinking, "oh well.. this is as far as we will go.. been a nice run.. but I'm headed out soon. Not wasting more time or putting much energy on such an unattainable endeavor."

Which would seem uncharacteristic.. but would explain much.

I think you're wrong. While he may not be on the book of face, I think the whole "curiosity" thing gets the best of him, just like the cat. So I think he reads everything he can get his hands on, then claims he doesn't read anything so he doesn't have to answer the questions directly.

But minimally (in case you're right and he's as bad at the Interwebz as he is at being an NFL QB) I suspect Mrs. Smith might ask him if he's really as bad as GloryDayz is saying.

I'll add that she better hire somebody who's better with a weapon than Alex is with a football.

I doubt that.

I think it's more likely that he's had his bell wrung in a serious way and we aren't ****ing around with him carrying the ball anymore in a year we should have won the division.

I also think clearly $3itty play calling hurts us...

No, that doesn't sound at all like a 13 year-old girl defending the "virtues" of Justin Beiber or anything...

The last part is just creepy.

Is Alex too scared or just too much of a good lil soldier that he can't walk up to Andy after a game and tell him to stop handicapping the team?

Would such an action push Andy into a frenzy and cut Smith? I don't know. Andy always appears rather approachable on player's thoughts.

Alex is no dummy. He has to know that Andy is hindering the offense. He's a vet QB... made millions upon millions... should he not be at a point to take the risk of having this discussion with his HC?

Alex has given speeches and spoken many times about how for anything in life... if what you are doing isn't working, then make changes.

So it baffles me why.. this set for life.. alleged SB hungry... smart QB... can't just walk right up to his H and tell him that he's being a ****ing idiot that's holding back HIS offense.
Smith was brought in specifically to buy-in to the offensive system and to run it on the field. He will do exactly as instructed and will run the plays Reid calls without question. If he's a smart as you say, why would he shit in his own yard?

The hope and spit-balling thought of the day.. is that Smith has had enough of the handicapping of the team. That he is tired of having Reid hold the team back. That he is of the belief that Andy would be receptive to player concerns and criticisms... and if he's not? doesn't need to keep playing for such a stubborn pig anyway.

The reality could just be.. that Alex is fine playing the good lil soldier.. collecting his paychecks.. and with minor gaf, just continue to let Andy do as he pleases without much fuss.

The other, and more likely reality, is that there are two parties "handicapping the team" and that ignorance is bliss.

In summary: Smith isn't going anywhere for at least one year. And if he plays well in 2017, he's coming back for more at the age of 34 with likely a retirement at 35.

Offense 2015: total yards/game = 331 (Record 10-6, strength of schedule= 3/32)
Offense 2016: total yards/ game = 331 (Record 10-4, strength of schedule = 7/32)

Red zone efficiency has been the issue this season but they've increased that by 13% in the last 3 games scoring a TD 57% of the time.

331 yards per game. 23rd in the league.

Yep....that should be good enough to see him come back.

If Smith comes back next year, his production will continue the downward trajectory enough that it may in fact cause certain people to call in to question Reid's competency as it relates to QB's and the offense in general.

At that point, it may be "requested" that Dorsey be put in complete control of personnel acquirement and that the duties of O-coord be turned over to a different and dedicated option.

=Profit.

So, come on back, Alex!

I think most QB play... good or bad... is conducive to playcalling. Particularly when the playcalling consists of so many sideways plays that have proven to be useless. Particularly when the ball is not going to your clear and proven playmakers.

Is Alex a good enough QB to overcome the playcalling? Though the win column suggests yes.. I think we all can see past that a bit.

I'm still locked in on Andy being the clear frontrunner of offensive problems.

Until he cuts the offense loose for entire games (within reason), and we see Alex sink or swim on this approach, Andy Reid remains the prime suspect.
