Non-offensive-touchdowns

People talk about this like it is luck and I disagree.
The chiefs have the right combo of players and coaches to be successful at this. When it happens this often it can't be random.

This year, the Chiefs have returned four interceptions for touchdowns, and also scored via a fumble return, kickoff return, and punt return. That’s seven non-offensive touchdowns for Kansas City, the most in the league. In addition, Kansas City hasn’t allowed a single non-offensive touchdown, so the Chiefs obviously lead the league in net non-offensive touchdowns.

That’s a remarkable number: in fact, over the course of NFL history, only a handful of teams have been at +8 for the season. One of those, though, was this Chiefs team three years ago.

The 2013 Chiefs scored 11 NO tds and gave up zero for a net of 11 the highest in history. I think giving up non-offensive touchdowns is just a knife in the gut. I think as chief fans we are spoiled by not remembering that.

Wouldn't hurt to have another high-end WR though I'm fairly confident that the current roster would fare better under a more capable signal-caller. Those guys are running all over the field, hands in the air, screaming "I'M OPEN, RIGHT HERE DUDE" to no avail.
Gotta' make those reads and see the whole picture regardless of whatever Reid has dialed-up. Sweet jeebus, one would hope that Reid's passing plays give the QB more than one option if needed.
It seems like they never rollout smith anymore. He seemed to throw better on the run than just sitting in the pocket.

Seems like teams always know when we try. Rolls out... looks looks... throws to the sideline.. either well out of bounds or what would take a perfect catch.

I think defenses are figuring out what Andy does.. and he's not adjusting well.

I can see forcing a TO as an outcome from a plan to pressure and cover the receivers tight on the back end but when a player gets a TD off it weaving back and forth across the field for 50 or more yards luck becomes a big factor.

The Chiefs have not only been lucky — they've been the luckiest team in the NFL this season.

And Kansas City, if it plans on being a contender in the AFC playoffs, needs to find that lucky again ahead of the postseason.

Sometimes it is absolutely better to be lucky than good, but consider some of the Chiefs' skin-of-their-teeth wins this year:

Definitely lots of opportunities that Smith doesn't see because he's fixed on the pllay at hand. Wide recievers are open all over the place many times.

Guy's legs must be popsicle sticks at this point, then. Sucks, because in an offense like Reid's, you need as many options as you can get.

We talk a lot about Reid and clock-management. While maybe not as "exciting" as trying to screen-run your way down the field, the establishment of a more traditional, grind-out running game would help him greatly in that particular area. Chiefs used to use that style of running to both run the clock and wear out the opposing defense.
"Air Wilson" worked a lot better with Lynch in the backfield.

Glad you asked. Answer depends on your perspective of what stats most matter.

Yards? 3rd down %? stats like these say KC defense sucks.

Consider philosophy and PPG allowed? Chiefs still somehow have a top 10 defense.

Funny how scheme and philosophy has had very, very similar an impact on both offense and defense. Both sides suck if you are a yardage geek... both are not, if PPG and dvoa is your thing...

Just looked this up:

Chiefs defensive penalties for 2016: 38/2.7 per game.

Broncos: 51/3.6 per game.

Broncos are third overall in leading the league, being "outdone" only by Jacksonville/56, and Miami/63 ( )

Chiefs D is creating turnovers and playing with more maturity than Denver this season.

The total of 38( KC )is league average, right in the middle of the spectrum with TEN, AZ, and NYJ.

The least penalties have been committed by New England and Carolina with a count of 28 each.
