Your point is not a bad one. Something similar happened at Tech. He was forced to play as a true freshman when Davis Webb got hurt. It turned out that Mahomes' freestyle ability was very helpful on a team with a shitty offensive line. By the time Webb got healhy, he had lost the starting job.

But I believe Pat's incredible success as a true freshman stunted his growth. Kliff could never get him to stay in the pocket, not even after 3 years of telling him over and over to stay in the pocket. Hopefully the Chiefs staff will have more success with Pat in this regard.

I hope so too. The great news is Big Ben and McNabb had outstanding careers freelancing and Mahomes can be a better freelancer than both those guys. It's hard to stop something that in both cases brought their teams a ton of postseason success. Both guys refused to stop freelancing until their bodies forced them to so I don't think we can underestimate how difficult a thing that will be to coach. Nor would I want to coach it out of him entirely. Just enough that he's not getting knocked out of games.
