Alex Smith praises Patrick Mahomes' ability to absorb coaching
Alex Smith praises Patrick Mahomes' ability to absorb coaching
Alex Smith knows what it’s like to be a first-round pick with high expectations. Selected first overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2005 draft, the current Chiefs starting quarterback looked back on his early years in the NFL and remembered the copious amounts of coaching tips. “It’s a whirlwind, there’s a lot of expectations on you and you’re juggling a lot — you’re thinking about a million different things and you’re getting coached on a ton of stuff,” Smith said during Monday’s press conference. Smith went on to admit that it wasn’t easy to take in all the info and translate it to the field. “I think it’s hard as a young guy, sometimes it’s easy to become robotic out there,” Smith said. “You’ve got so much coaching going on out there and it’s hard on game day, at least it was hard for me sometimes just to flip back into playing. “I was trying so hard on making my feet right and my fundamentals right that I was getting coached on, especially for me coming away from under center snap and all my footwork and things like that was so different for me having played in the gun most of my college career. It was hard sometimes to translate it.” Luckily, Smith believes that Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs’ 2017 first-round selection, is doing a better job of absorbing coaching tips and converting it to on-field play than Smith did back in ’05. “You have that coaching — go out and play on game day and cut it loose,” Smith said. “That took me a long time to get back into that mode whereas I think Pat is much better and way more fluid at that, being able to handle the coaching.” Andy Reid on Patrick Mahomes starting this year: 'It's Alex's job' Mahomes started his NFL career on a positive note, going 17-for-23 with 166 total yards and three touchdowns in two preseason games. Smith attributes Mahomes’ beginning success to his ability to loosen up and play once he hits the field. “Once the whistle blows out there, you want to just get back to playing quarterback and there are a lot of things that he does instinctively and has done that have gotten him here,” Smith said. “You don’t want to lose that. “Even though you are getting coached on a gazillion different things you just want to get back to playing ball. I think he does a great job of that naturally, just cutting that loose and taking the coaching, but once it’s time to play, just go play.” |

So you respect Alex and consider him to be a class act, but you are taking what he says with a grain of salt? So apparently, you think this class act is purposely fabricating shit? It's not totally mind boggling that Alex would say nice things about Kaep. Kaep is a better QB than Alex. That's why he beat Alex out for the spot. People can say what they want about Alex, but the guy doesn't seem to be a hater and does seem to have a grip on his own limitations. |

Alex Smith praises Patrick Mahomes' ability to absorb coaching

Eh. Same situation. Mahomes and Kaepernick were both drafted by the head coach to be the guy. Alex was only a stop gap when they drafted Kaepernick, that was also the lockout offseason. Mahomes is Andy Reid's guy. Alex has no ego about him and will always do what's best for the team. There's no fake ness to him. Kaepernick however was never under any circumstance a better qb than Alex. Better playmaker. Not a better qb. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

IMHO Alex11 needs a little less efficiency and a lot more effectiveness and that's what coaches are working with him on. Some play makers are loose cannons and Alex11 is being trained to loosen his cannon up in able to be a "play maker" Alex11 needs to not let it get loose but to get it out and have some fun with it. I think Alex11 may be fun to watch this year!!!!!!
I have never said Alex11 has played the last few years as a solid dependable lackluster QB, but he has been exactly that: Boring yet a highly rated QBs in the NFL. Oh and a real playoff game appearance ( I don't count wild cards) As I recall SF drafted him as a 1st round #1 overall pic. If you look at his stats he never had 1 season in SF that was better than at KC He only played an average of 10 games a season with only 2 16 game seasons out of 8. In KC he averages 15 1\2 games a season for 4 years His passing is yardage and ratings overall are higher than ever at SF and his INT % are lower. KC got more than they expected as he has preformed better for us than at SF. This year the Chiefs are hitting Alex!! with a double down approach. " Do what we want. open up the field, use your weapons, and make plays, and win games." and "Oh and by the way, meet PMll, he wants your job, badly!" I personally think that Alex 11 is not only going to play better because of the new approach to his passing game but for the simple reason that he is fighting for the quality of the remainder of his career. I think that this is our year to win a SB for the first time since 1969. If Alex brings us 6-12 more points every game we should at least get past where we have been in the last 47 years. Getting a chance to play for the AFC title. IMHO Alex11 will fight to get us there and if need be, we have PMll to take over. When the season is over we better hope that our #10 overall pic learns all he can so when he does step up he plays up to the hype for the next 10-15 years. I will certainly say looking at Alex11's stats at SF they didn't get from Smith what they paid for. Let's hope PMll is a better deal. |

CK has him beat in playoff success, more 1000 yd receivers, better passer rating. He's a better runner and playmaker. CK took his job and the offensive YPG and PPG increased.
The career percentages also favor CK. TD%, int%, YPA, YPC all have CK ahead of Alex. Alex only has him beat in completion % thanks to rarely throwing the ball more than 10 yards. They can claim Alex is better at all these things we can't quantify, but the proof is in the results. The only thing Alex has been better at is being on a team that is miles better than CKs. Keep reminding them CK is better. There is no bigger punch to the gut for an Alex fan than the cold hard facts of CK > Alex. |

Years from now we are going to look back on Alex and be so thankful of the way he helped Mahomes instead of brushing him off like he has every right to do. He's actually looking out for the long-term future of the Chiefs even though he won't be here.

You know what will happen?
Mahomes will play out his rookie deal, we will fail to resign him, and he'll walk to Denver and win multiple SBs. Because Chiefs Posted via Mobile Device |

http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/split...lin-kaepernick Scroll down the link mid-way to see the first half/second half stats I mention. He was inaccurate and ineffective in so many 2nd halves.. but the numbers won't reflect that as much since they get blurred into the whole of the games. I don't hate Kaep at all. I never blamed him for the decisions of the coaching/FO. I think he evolved into quite an idiot from the once humble person he was. I don't typically care for backyard baller types that refuse to improve on their weaknesses. But I don't hate, resent, or think of Kaep at all. I actually feel a little bad for him. He got over-hyped early on.. let it get to his sponge-head, and easily fell victim to some strong influences surrounding him. When he started out, it was easy to see the natural talent. Great arm, very fast straight-line speed.. moxie. He's not a terrible QB.. but he's not good enough to look beyond all the off-field crap that comes with him.. and it's easy to doubt that his football dedication will ever reach an acceptable level.

This has turned into a shitty Kape / Alex debate thread. Some people just love reliving that moment again and again and again...

This is what a true franchise QB looks like. Take note Denver fans.
