The Chiefs’ rebuild is on in full force, apparently, as the club is expected to part ways with safety Ron Parker this offseason, sources told The Star on Monday.

The move is expected to create approximately $4.9 million in salary cap space in 2018 for the cash-strapped Chiefs, who are expected to have approximately $19 million in cap space when Parker is released and the trades of quarterback Alex Smith and cornerback Marcus Peters are made official next month.

The Chiefs will create an additional $6.6 million in cap space if outside linebacker Tamba Hali retires or is released.

Parker, 30, has been a steady constant in the Chiefs’ secondary since 2013, when he was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. Since becoming a starter in 2014, he has recorded 40 pass defenses and seven interceptions and averaged 75 tackles per season.

Cap space shouldn't be an issue at all. The NFL is projecting an $8-11 million dollar increase this year so we could be looking at $35-40 million in free cap space.

I agree but they are going to need quite a few new players along with our rookies. This is definitely a rebuild year.

The time is now though to do this with a cheap Mahomes contract and we will have plenty of money.

I liked Parker early on. Guys like him are a lot of fun to cheer on because they have to absolutely work their ass off to get anything.

The question I have is, how many teams who have built a young defense in the offseason, has managed to make a deep run In the playoffs? Is there a particular team who has done this in recent years?

I’ve said it before and I guess I’ll keep saying it.

In a capped sport it’s about efficiency rather than youth or whatever other metric. It’s about production per unit payroll. Parker was a guy that fit that mold. We got a lot of production or of him especially early on and he wasn’t necessarily young.

It’s not good to have the whole damn team be 23-25. Then their contracts all come up at the same time and you’re starting the **** over. A team needs a balance of guys and for them to not get bunched up to have consistent sustainable success.

All that stems from good personnel decisions and avoiding the hard busts both with draft equity and free agent payroll.

But yeah. A full on fire everybody youth movement isn’t as productive as you’d think. Good teams have middle tier free agent acquisitions that are efficient payroll dollars.
