The Chiefs free up franchise tag money by trading Dee Ford, an outside linebacker in a 3 - 4 because he doesn't have a place in the new scheme.

So, you think the Chiefs will trade for an outside linebacker that plays in a 3 - 4 that has been franchised by Houston. Which means, money saved by trading Ford is eaten up by Clowney.

I don't think so.

The funny thing with Ford is he played in a 4-3 as DE in college. Not sure why it would've been a big deal to keep him as a DE. But anyways, Clowney can indeed play in a 4-3. Just not sure where the rumor came from.

I'm sure A LOT more went into the decision of letting ford go than just a schematic fit. theres that...Injury history, Lack of run defense. Lots of question marks. I think most people who have watched his career would be pretty hesitant so sign him long term. And if theres any doubt then trading him a year early is a good move IMO.

Clowney is much bigger than ford, and is a more complete player. He has prototypical size for a 4-3 DE.

seven pounds bigger. Ford is listed at 260. Clowney at 267.

I believe one reason for the Ford trade was to free up money. Both Ford and Clowney were franchised.
