The All-Time Chiefs Single-Season Team

Random offseason thread. I looked at the AV value that pro-football-reference applies to players and picked out the highest single-season AVs in Chiefs history. (Sorry, returners not available since they don't define that as a position.)

I let players move to similar positions, e.g., FS and SS, LG and RG, HB and FB, etc.

Here's the first-string team. It's a 3-4.

RB Priest Holmes 2002
RB Abner Haynes 1962
QB Patrick Mahomes 2018
WR Otis Taylor 1966
WR Tyreek Hill 2018
TE Travis Kelce 2018
OT Willie Roaf 2004
G Brian Waters 2004
C Tim Grunhard 1991
G Will Shields 2002
OT Mitchell Schwartz 2018
K Jan Stenerud 1969
P Jerrel Wilson 1968
S Deron Cherry 1984
S Johnny Robinson 1968
CB Albert Lewis 1989
CB Emmitt Thomas 1974
OLB Derrick Thomas 1991
OLB Bobby Bell 1969
ILB Willie Lanier 1973
ILB Sherrill Headrick 1962
DE Jared Allen 2007
DE Neil Smith 1995
DT Buck Buchanan 1969

Here's the second team. It's a 4-3.

RB Larry Johnson 2006
RB Jamaal Charles 2010
QB Len Dawson 1962
WR Derrick Alexander 2000
WR Dwayne Bowe 2010
TE Tony Gonzalez 2004
OT Jim Tyrer 1967
G Ed Budde 1966
C Jack Rudnay 1976
G Dave Szott 1997
OT John Alt 1990
K Nick Lowery 1982
P Jim Arnold 1984
S Bobby Hunt 1962
S Eric Berry 2016
CB James Hasty 1997
CB Dale Carter 1995
OLB Justin Houston 2014
OLB E.J. Holub 1962
MLB Derrick Johnson 2015
DE Art Still 1984
DE Mel Branch 1960
DT Dan Saleaumua 1995
DT Chris Jones 2020

This concludes the thread. You may comment on it if you wish, or you can merely think about it while walking in the woods.

Pound for pound I'm going say that hardest hitter would be Deron Cherry. We would deliver the wood.

Willie Roaf actually literally ate linebackers but from what I remember Deron Cherry could hit like Ronny Lot.

Deron Cherry could knock out Eric Berry spirit.

You have Jared Allen 2007 out of position he was drafted as a long snapper. He often played out of position. Over rated long snapper taken too high in the draft.

I can relate, I’ve missed decades of Chiefs being deployed, always overseas and life happening. In six weeks I get transferred from S. Korea to Kuwait. Someday my life will be my own, lol.

He was awesome and played on some of our most horrendous teams. Him and Art Still deserved better.

Pound for pound, I think Barbaro may have been the hardest hitter in Chiefs history. When I put the list together, I was thinking about who the best player was that didn't make the list. Barbaro immediately came to mind.

Given that this is the best single-season performances, I'm a little surprised that Okoye didn't make the running back list for 1989. Bill Maas is another good player not on it, and I'm surprised that Harrison Butker and Dustin Colquitt didn't claim slots at their positions.

Really? Okoye was definitely before my time. 1480 yards and 12 TDs is pretty good but he only had 2 catches for 12 yards in an entire season lol

That production doesn't hold a candle to Priest Holmes from 2002-2004, Larry Johnson in 2005-2006, Jamaal Charles in 2010, 2012-2014 or even Kareem Hunt in 2017.

We've been really lucky as Chiefs fans when it comes to RB.

Yeah, good point. I don't know the formula that pfr uses to calculate AV. I just know that Okoye led the league in rushing that year. But he also didn't have the ypc and/or TD production that the other running backs did that you mention. We have indeed been blessed in the running back department.

Yes also Burress would bring it too.

I saw Cherry as more a smart fitness safety that was more sure tackler than a hard-hitting guy.

That was my impression of Cherry as well He certainly wasn't afraid of run support, but I saw his strength as ball tracking out in center field.

Barbaro could also play center field, but I saw him as more of an enforcer I still think he'd be a Hall of Famer now if he didn't move to the USFL.

He was a big dude for a safety, too. I know that Clark's not a big guy, but check him out next to Barbaro, who was a freakin' free safety.

Ugh. This offense would destroy anything in its path.

Seriously. I don't even think a all-time single-season Ravens, Steelers or Bears defense would be able to stop it.
