The Chiefs are the most battle tested, have a two game lead in their division and are the #1 seed in the AFC. They have an aggressive, opportunistic defense and an incredible home field advantage. They also have two gentlemen named Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.

They are absolutely the best team at this point. It's a long season, but right now it looks like they're doing nothing more than separating themselves even earlier than usual.

In retrospect, it's easy now to understand what is happening to the Bills. The focus of their entire season was on week 6 when they played the Chiefs. No other week mattered to them in any way like week 6. Once they won that game, it was like they won the Super Bowl, so they all relaxed. Their season might be totally f***** now as they struggle to find themselves again over the remaining games. I predict they fail to win the division.

This chart says the most balanced teams in the NFL are the Eagles, Bills and Bengals. The best offensive EPA combined with meh defense is the Chiefs and Dolphins.

Yes.

We can still just have a shit game and lose to anyone. But when KC loses, it's rarely about the opponent.

As we get further into the season that seems to happen less and less, though. Just from memory it seems we do that earlier in the season usually before we round into play-off shape.
I like that way of putting it and would also add that the Chiefs are the hunted, with teams specifically being built to beat them, and of course divisional games add a layer of difficulty.

Other teams have that incentive to win in Sept/Oct and prove something (like the Chiefs used to) where as the Chiefs are playing relatively vanilla and hanging out until the real season starts.

No, it doesn't say that. It might say that if all teams had played exactly equal schedules, but that is entirely false.

They built their team to beat KC and they did. They have been the SB favorites all year. Heck the media dang near handed them the Lombardi before the season started. Allen was the runaway pick for MVP as well. As such they have become everyone’s SB (except KC). They are currently struggling with being the hunted as it’s unfamiliar territory for them. Plus the AFCE is far better than anyone thought so they don’t get to benefit from a weak division like the Pats did for almost 20 years. Will be interesting to see if they can overcome this, as they have the talent to do it.

Maybe you’ll end up being right, but let’s not forget the Chiefs we’re 5-4 at this time last year and still went to the AFCCG.

Bills have had the 2nd hardest schedule in the league so far (that’s not my opinion, that’s the official updated SOS). They faced the Chiefs, Vikings, Ravens, Dolphins, Titans and Jets. The Bills have the best strength of victory in the NFL too, while maintaining the highest point differential.

Chiefs have had hard opponents too, but they’ve also had more layups. Jags, Colts, Raiders, Bucs - those teams have a combined record of 14-24. The Bills layups have been the Steelers and Packers. Difference being that the Bills obliterated their layups and the Chiefs are barely beating a couple of their layups.

Barring injury, I have little doubt it’ll be Chiefs vs Bills in the end.

Balance would be indicated by teams on a diagonal from bottom left to top right. Teams closest to that line would have equally good (or bad) offense and defense.

The diagonals actually shown indicate tiers of team when offense and defense are considered together. It shows that the Chiefs ate the best team, followed by Bills and Eagles. The Chiefs offense is good enough to carry their meh defense.

Of course in a single game elimination playoff system, single game variations stack the odds strongly against any team taking it all. The Chiefs are the best, but their odds of winning the SB are only about 1:5.

Did anyone else wonder if that Josh Allen fumble might have something to do with how hard he can grip a ball

Yeah when you have the best offense in the league and only a slightly below average defense, you are in a great position to win in the playoffs. That’s common sense.

But what the chart tells you are the most balanced teams are the Eagles, Bills and Bengals.

On any EPA chart you want to look at the upper right quadrant. That’s how EPA x,y charts work.
