Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

We have a metric shitload of draft picks.

How far do we have to move up to get a guy worth a shit?

Assume we cant afford JuJu now or Hardman. You are relying on Moore and Toney, I dont think thats a great idea.

It's a hell of a lot easier to replace starting WRs in late 1 or later than it is you're starting LT.

That fact is how the OBJ trade happened to begin with, good LTs just don't hit FA or fall in the draft.

If you just let OBJ go well have someone like Taylor Lewan and the 10 games he'll play.

Use that money to build Mahomes and Reid a top 5 defense.
Most people are projecting Harrison and Jones to go before us...

Yeah, lets go with Skyy Moore mk2 at the end of round 1.

If that happens your probably getting a WR first and a vet signing, Justin Watson also probably comes back as he's fine as a WR 6.

Yes that 1 example and the book isn't even written on him at this point.

Let's not point out all the outstanding WRs that went 32 or later.

I can find you far more productive WRs taken 32 or later than I can LTs..and shit Brown is one of the few that did it.

Should get at what a minimum of 2nd rounder for OBJ? Pair #31 with the draft capital you get for OBJ and move up and get your future left tackle on a rookie deal for 5 years.

Why are you acting like they can't add any WRs if they re-sign OBJ?

The Chiefs have cap space and up to 12 draft picks. ****ing relax.

What team is giving you a high pick for OBJ? Who's gonna pay for the right to give him a ridiculous contract?

Being in the market for a LT, is hugely stressful.

But I think it's legitimate to worry about locking up big bucks in a guaranteed contract. Brown has already shown he isn't going to sign a contract that has team friendly outs.

After he gets paid, will he be a work out warrior in order to keep his weight down and quickness up to take on speed rushers? And will he still play at a high enough level if he doesn't have a pro bowl caliber guard next to him? Or can he be quick enough through routine/nagging injuries?

It's not that it is never worth backing up the Brink's truck, but it isn't risk free. So even if things are more likely than not to work out okay... It's worth at least playing devil's advocate because the down side on these huge contracts are a bit grim...

But of course as has been pointed out over and over, the alternatives aren't great...

OBJ isn't likely to cost us much more next season, if at all. I don't think it'll be his contract that prevents us from signing other players.

How many offseasons is it going to take for people to realize that the Chiefs, and in particular Veach, know what they're doing?
