Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.
https://theathletic.com/4161606/2023...3&redirected=1

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

Agreed.

I'd say there's maybe a 10% chance that duo is as good/better than what we had last year.

But Crow really thinks OBJ is a tub of guts. I believe he has stated that he doesn't thing he's a good OT or even an average one. My memory is that he things Brown is just flat out bad.

He is about as fond of OBJ as I am of Clark.

So his stance here isn't unexpected.

Dillard was a fairly raw prospect with substantial tools coming out of WSU. He hasn't really developed and in the process has shown an injury history.

The question isn't even if Dillard/Pipkins can play as well as Brown/Wylie. It's if Dillard, Pipkins, a rookie and a veteran FA can. Because I'd say you'll probably get at least 10-12 missed starts between those two.

Trading for Tunsil is a pipe dream that has a far worse net effect than just signing Brown does.

It's do something like what I have or go all-in in a big move in round 1. There's literally zero alternative.

There are three 1st round caliber LTs unless you really think Skoronski can stay at LT (I don't). I like Wright but he's not a LT. That means the probability of getting one goes way down by pick 14.

The Bears, Falcons, Cardinals, Jets, Titans, Patriots, and Steelers have all been pretty actively looking at tackles.

We aren't getting one by trading into the 20's, no matter what folks want to hope for.
Too bad Veach couldn’t make a deal to trade Brown to Chicago by tagging and trading for the Bears 1st.

We lost 3 games last year and they all had one common theme: Orlando Brown getting his ass kicked. Badly.

And a lot of these other games were Andy scheming hiss ass off. The 49ers were a perfect example of that with screens, quick passes, chips and jet sweeps.

Is that not the bar for a rookie LT? Not a tackle at 31, but a guy we trade up for. Darnell Wright? Anton Harrison?

Idk gang. This staff has killed it in the draft and just keeps getting better. I have a lot of faith in them. They’ve earned it

I think we pick Broderick Jones. He’s huge and athletic and has long 34 3/4 arms. I’d play him from day 1 and scheme to help him. He will be great in the run game from day 1 and is an athletic improvement over obj in pass. It’s a risk but I’d take it. He looks legit.

This is really all there is to say. If they’re letting Brown walk, it means they think they can find a better fit for a lower cost. What they have up their sleeve, only Bert and Andrew know. I can assure everyone that they’re not going pretend they don’t need a left tackle. They will acquire several of them.

I suspect that OBJs agent is asking for the outrageous and that precludes a trade or extension. The only way to let him find out that his agent is feeding him a line is to let him test the market. If you are the chiefs, maybe he comes back to the table when he finds his actual value. If someone overpays, you still get a 3rd round comp pick.

Yeah, it's probably they draft a LT prospect next month.

Expecting him to step in right away and replace OBJ is just plain unrealistic.
Again, there were folks on here who called for him to be benched/released THE ENTIRE SEASON. It didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now.

I’ve got to admit, Chiefsplanet still has its burst.

“Under no circumstance should we tag/sign this bum!”

So, we choose to not sign/tag him…..

“Oh no! What do we do now!”

I love you Chiefsplanet! Keep being you!

They absolutely could, provided the kid proves he can play the position in the first place. You're just assuming that he gives you average play with a few ups and downs.

There's a very real (and probably better) chance the kid isn't even average, especially to start with.

There's no way Veach is looking at replacing OBJ with a rookie and not have something else planned.

If you're not talking about a tackle at 31, then you're just assuming they're going to trade up or even be able to trade up.

And yes, this staff deserves everything ounce of faith we have. That doesn't mean they're robots, immune to mistakes.

Like I said, putting all of your eggs in the "trade up and take a tackle" bucket has a much higher chance of failing than working. He better have a backup plan.

All too true. No way Andy puts a rook LT out there from Day 1. That's been done before by countless teams, and it does not go well. Especially when you consider that we have to play Maxx Crosby/Bosa twice/season.

If Brown gets ****ing owned by Crosby and Bosa then what difference does it make? Any other LT gonna get owned too.

Lol, Brown at least kind of played them like a LT.

Rooks at LT, well I remember DAL trying it once vs. KC when DT and NS were still together on the team. Let's just say after the safety where both Neil and Derrick collided with the QB, and the rookie LT literally jumped back at the snap, threw his hands out from his chest and blocked nothing but air, they took him out.

unless the dude is the second-coming of Willie Roaf, it shouldn't happen.
