Nate Taylor: Chiefs expected to franchise OBJ again [not happening]

Quote:
Brown is technically the Chiefs’ top free agent, though for the second consecutive year, he might never reach the open market. Similar to last year, the Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Brown, which will prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Such a move will allow both parties more time to negotiate a lucrative contract extension. If the parties cannot agree to a deal by the middle of July, Brown would once again be restricted to a one-year salary of $18.4 million, according to Over The Cap.

Quote:
The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes the Chiefs are "expected" to place the franchise tag on LT Orlando Brown again.

Brown played on the tag last year, briefly threatening to not report to camp before showing up on time. Since coming over for the Ravens in a trade, Brown has been stellar if not exceptional, and would probably profile as one of the five best free agents on the market if he got there. Taylor also writes that Brown turned down a six-year, $139 million deal with a $30.25 million signing bonus last offseason.
Not really new news...but he won't be hitting the open market at least.

I feel better about starting 1 first round rookie than two or three rookie corners and we won a superbowl doing that. I trust Bart and Andy.

I can see starting a rookie at LT IF drafted in the first two rounds and fairly polished, and IF they have more experience at RT.

I think the best path for me would be to get the T you want in Rounds 1-2 and pair a strong starting RT option (ie Jawaan Taylor) with a solid vet stopgap (ie Beachum, or take an upside swing with Dillard or Lewan).

I know Lewan isn’t what he was but the way he’s talked I think you could get him reasonably on a fair deal. He needs to prove he’s still got it and going to a team with a solid line in place and an elusive QB helps that case. Odds are he doesn’t make a full season though so said rookie would need to be capable of stepping in.

The field conditions had nothing to do with it.

Do you really think the Chiefs should have paid what OBJ wanted? What's your ACTUAL stance?

We'll probably go with an unbalanced line, with LG Thuney, C Humphrey, RG1 Smith, RG2 4th round pick, RT 5th round pick.

If Veach wants to draft a LT this year, he's gonna have to give up an additional 1st next year at minimum. To get one of the top LTs, I see no other way around this. Unless Houston is wiling to trade Tunsil for a couple of 1st which I would definitely consider.

Saw a vid from a Vikings' podcaster that says the Chiefs should trade for Ezra Cleveland. It's obviously a fan idea and Cleveland hasn't been great as a LG in Minnesota, but he came in as an athletic LT. He thinks the kid needs to be a LT.

I remember alot of people liking Cleveland in that draft as a LT prospect that could maybe replace Fisher. Anyhow, I'd be all over it if it were actually an option to send them a 3rd/6th or something along those lines.

He hasnt been the same since he got busted for PED's. When he came back, he was a shell of what he once was. Pass.

The pressure rates have nothing to do with Mahomes holding the ball and running around. Those are based on the first 2.5 seconds of a passing play. Brown and Wylie's pressure rates were both pretty bad.

Brown had some good games, and some bad games, but overall, by any statistical measure he's real average. Wylie, as I think I've made clear, blows goats.

Both played well in the Super Bowl, but the field conditions were almost certainly helpful. Good on them, nice job fellas, see you later.

You don't pay top of the market for that level of play, you just don't. Not if you want to stay on top, you don't.

Yeah. I think the field conditions helped the Chiefs more than most of us want to admit. Eagles had zero sacks, and the Chiefs had 2 "sacks" that were bc Hurts couldn't turn the corner while scrambling and lost a yard or two

The field conditions were huge. There were many clips circulating of Reddick just slipping on his rush basically right off the snap. That field played a huge role in neutralizing their edge rushers.

Still think the interior would have been fine, but Brown and Wylie were absolutely aided immensely by the field.

Yeah, and now OBJ and Wylie want to get paid, and some desperate GM is likely to do it. Good thing bart veetch is too smart to fall into that trap
