The problem is that he wants to be paid as if his best ever season and only one with a playoff sack is his norm, when reality his norm is like 50-75% of last season. There’s basically zero chance he can live up to 27.5 per year much less 32.5 per year.

Honest question, how come we can't use Mahomes contract to slightly overpay some guys? He has the most restracturable contract in the league. Why not use it? He's not going to be bad anytime soon so adding a few more mil per year to his cap number the next 5 years doesn't matter to us and if we have to be in salary cap hell for a couple of seasons after his prime, who the **** cares?

If you have an elite QB, and can draft well, does the salary cap matter that much? People bring up the Saints as the reason to not do this, but their downfall was that they were AWFUL at drafting and coaching defense. If you think Veach can draft well and we have at least decent defensive coaching, why not manipulate the salary cap as much as possible to retain/sign premium players?

Good thing he's not asking for 32.5 per year. And he's still been the 2nd or 3rd best DT in the league all those other years. You guys are trying to make it seem like he's just decent apart from this year and 2018. He's been an all pro 4 out of his last 5 years. 3 times 2nd team and one time 1st team.

1 first and 3 2nds does not equal what he's asking. No player on our team is worth what he's asking except Mahomes. Only an top level QB is worth 30 mil average. Period.

Per the article I posted he is asking that.

The $84.5 million that Florio says is the magic number would lead to a new money total of $65 million, or $32.5 million a season, which would blow away any other extension for a non-QB and fly past Donald’s number.

Yea, that didn't come out right. I was trying to state that everyone agrees Jones importance, especially to the defense. I think it is reasonable to put Jones and Kelce either 2 or 3 most important to the Chiefs. However, If Kelce was asking for $24 million, my same argument would stand.

Well if you're referring to the Mahomes restructure we can do ant any time to save cap space, then yes we can and without Patrick's permission, however that is money going to his account. Is Clark willing to do that? It seems he doesn't want to do that often and unless it's really needed.

Veach can draft well but we do draft at the end of each round every year. Having a higher pick does make a difference. Trent McDuffie is a good example of this. He seems like a legit blue chipper. Obviously Skyy Moore is TBD but if he's a good WR this year like we hope then there's more proof.

Having another anchor for a contract could make cap very tricky. Yeah Veach has been very good drafting, but it's not wise to think he'll be that good every year. No GM has great drafts consistently every year. Always good to have flexibility in cap space.

Well yeah, the average for anything is going to be a high if you arbitrarily decide to leave off the lowest number.

Using those same numbers, if I pick out the first two years and ignore the last then he wants 24mil average.

If you think 28 per is too much, I get it. But trying to frame it as if he'll get more than Donald just based on 2 years of a 3 year contract is just weird to me.

The Chiefs are up against the cap. I can't foresee them increasing his salary this year to $24-25 million so he is going to be paid $20 million this year (that isn't new that is current contract for 2023 plus he already received his pro rated bonus etc for this year). So as this guy pointed out it is a 2 year extension.

Not yet. But the worm is turning for the fan base and possibly for ownership. CJ should be ready for that. Especially if his recess lasts very much longer.
