I don’t think the Chiefs would actually do it, but it IS an example of how the Chiefs have leverage that Jones and his agents were either unaware of or unconcerned about.

but you’re talking about a much smaller salary there, with no impact to the franchise tag. So there’s no incentive for the team for it.

I think there’s a very simple way to look at it.

The 49ers want Nick Bosa for the long haul. Attempting to withhold a small amount from him to prove some point is counterproductive if it reduces the odds he stays with the team longer term.

Chiefs face a similar yet different situation. We can play the hardest of hardball and not pay him for 1-2 weeks after he reports or whatever, but that only makes it more obvious that our relationship with him is beyond repair. And that means that we lose a fair bit of leverage when we’re tagging and trading him because no one sits around thinking he’s actually going to be a member of the Chiefs the following season.

Our best play is to keep things as amicable as possible and not to be unnecessarily punitive in the way we approach it because the marginal amount of cap relief we stand to gain by nickel and diming him lags behind the value of the potential compensation we might lose if our leverage vanishes.

If Jones wanted to play out his 2023 contract and hit the market next year there is absolutely nothing preventing him from doing that right now. The Chiefs don't need to offer him shit. All he needs to do is report to the team. Seriously, what the **** are you talking about?

I don't think it would be in the Chiefs best interest to trade him until next offseason even if they knew they could not get a deal done. I realize they would get a bigger haul before this year (but maybe not much since his franchise tag number could be super low next year) but there is so much value in needing Jones for this years Super Bowl run before Travis Kelce gets too old.

I see very little downside to tagging and trading him next year. Its really the best case scenario for the Chiefs.
1) Chiefs get Jones for around 10M less THIS year.
2) Chiefs get Jones fresh with no chance of an injury until after week 8 or whatever. Having a player with fresh legs for the playoff push is an advantage.
3) Chiefs get a player that HAS to play the best football of his life because its a contract year and pair that with one of Kelces last elite years.
4) The Chiefs get to tag him at a much lower value next year that make trading him much more attractive.

I cant imagine a better scenario for the Chiefs. Brett Veach is fist pumping.

Yeah, or more likely, he gets injured trying to ramp up and keep up with other players are in midseason and playoff ready form. Or we drop a game due to the defense and lose the 1st seed and maybe have to play on the road for the AFCCG or some other playoff game.

Those are more likely than him coming in after 10 months of no football and being his normal self.

Except the $500 for this year has already been agreed to. It's two separate deals. To put it another way, the Chiefs already bought 2023 for $19.5m. Any money paid on top of that is to buy future years of service.
