I don’t get it.

I ridiculed this hire the second the Lions made it, in part because Bienemy had been interviewing and I was convinced EB was a slam dunk hire.

Instead, Campbell gets hired by the Lions. And it’s very clear to me from his first press conference that he’s a huge dingdong.

He says stupid things. He doesn’t seem to possess a reservoir of intelligence that I can detect. He gave an interview with Pat McAfee where he literally describes himself as being distracted by fans doing the wave.

What is going on? Why has he worked out in Detroit so far? Is this the best con job in America, and it turns out this guy is absolutely a genius?

How the hell has Dan Campbell worked out?

Ben Johnson is the best answer I can provide.

Will Campbell’s success last once Johnson takes a HC job?

I suspect “No.”

Also suspect Johnson lands with the team that drafts one of Caleb Williams or Drake Maye, and is in better shape than the other.

And hey, you can't have one without the other. If a little bit of dumbassery makes you more approachable and creates a better team environment, then you absolutely lean into that.

Think Andy and all his fat guy and cheeseburger jokes. He's an offensive genius, yes, and he's also a tough coach, but he gets results, and one of the many tools he uses is, "Look at me, I'm a fat guy."

Think about the opposite, where it's nothing but Xs and Os and saying smart shit all the time. You get Adam Gase. And ironically, people think he's an absolute dumbass of a coach because he just completely lacks any kind of charm.

I think Brandon Staley has that same problem. He got hired by getting sneezed on by McVay, and he's clearly well-spoken in press conferences and the like. People think, "Hey, he speaks without verbal tics and doesn't use cliches as much as other coaches. And analytics!!! Boy is that guy ever smart!" But when you've only ever basically coached Division 3 college football and never played in the league, it's not always that simple.

Good drafts by Dorsey and surrounding himself with good assistants probably has a lot to do with his success. Plus the players seem to relate to him which could say a lot.

DET desperately needed a culture change, and Dan did that. Hell, not that different from what Andy did when he came to KC. Or when he first arrived in PHI.

Will he be successful in the long-term? No idea. We'll probably know after his coordinators start getting other jobs over the next couple years. And how cooperative his ownership is as time goes on.

But it's a fact that they found their identity last season, that they were the highest scoring team in the league over the last 8 or 10 games with 29.8 pts/gm (McAfee referenced that stat this morning, don't remember who he cited), and that since Week 9 of last season, they allowed just one team to score more than 25 points on them.
