#Chiefs GM Brett Veach says he's hopeful that DT Chris Jones will play in their season opener vs. the Lions, which is just eight days away.

The arguments are more about Jones expected production going forward, and the fact that he's really only had two all-world seasons and a bunch of very good ones. Whereas Donald won DOPY 3 times and had 9 all-pro (or w/e) seasons in a row.

Quinnen Williams got 13 sacks from the inside.

His 'strong case to argue' got him $24 million.

Dexter Lawrence was actually a MORE efficient interior pass rusher than Jones - it got him $23.5.

Your entire argument requires that you ignore everything else that happened on the DT market this off-season. And ignore age.

The length was essential to the bargain; it was a 10-year extension for the guy that is/was, by far, the best QB in the game.

Using this logic Chris Jones could demand more. I don't know why people push Mahomes and Kelce taking discounts when they really didn't. They both signed top of their market deals when they signed. Kelce was the highest paid tight end right up until Kittle signed his that same day. Mahomes signed the highest contract in history. Hell I'm pretty sure Thuney had the biggest contract for a guard when he signed. This really isn't a team full of guys making sacrifices like what people make it out to be. All the guys are trying to get the best possible contract.

You can be the highest paid at your position and still clearly be taking unders relative to your value to the team. Kelce puts up elite receiver numbers every year yet far less important WRs get paid significantly more eg Christian Kirk at Jacksonville.

Some of these guys are the same people who say every offseason "If "Player X" wants to win a ring, he'll take less to play with Mahomes!". No one takes less, they just don't ask for more after every new contract is signed to reset the market.

I actually disagree with that. While DTs do get more now, they are still well under Donald’s contract. I view the Donald contract as a one off (much like the Deshaun Watson one) vs the standard setter.

Mahomes’ contract did spur on a huge rise in QB contracts because teams realize that the QB is the most important position on the field and they will either pay it or continue to not compete for SBs. Plus QBs can still be elite well into their mid-late 30s and well into contract #3.

QBs and agents know this as well which is why you get awful contracts like Daniel Jones. He has benefited from the “rising tide” concept. QBs have all the leverage and they know it. Unfortunately for DTs, at least at this point, they do not. Donald was the unicorn based on his accolades and being one of the best ever at his position.

I like Jones and beat him no ill will. I just don’t know if he’s going to get what he wants at his age.
