Jimmy Carter, 39th US president and noted humanitarian, has died

Former President Jimmy Carter, honored more widely for his humanitarian work around the globe after his presidency than for his White House tenure during a tumultuous time, has died. He was 100.

"Our founder, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia," the Carter Center confirmed on Sunday.

In November 2023, the Nobel Peace Prize-winner's wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, also passed away in the modest house they built together in 1961, when he had taken over his father's peanut warehouse business and was only beginning to consider a political career.

In February 2023, he had announced he was ending medical intervention and moving to hospice care.

Jason Carter had visited his grandparents at the time of the announcement and said "They are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love," he posted on twitter

I would say sad news, but 100 years is an amazingly long journey in this world. He lead a life of service and was a true humanitarian. That was a life well-lived. RIP, Sir.

RIP President Carter.
The brother couldn't make beer and Jimmy couldn't POTUS. Billy was a turd human and Jimmy was the complete opposite.

If Carter was 5'10" then I'm Andre the ****ing Giant. The main thing I took away from seeing him in person nearly 30 years ago was how tiny he was. Like elf tiny.

And yes, I know if you google his height it says he was 5'10", but I've seen the man and I'm telling you he wasn't. Not even close.

I remember he came to our church in Eastern Iowa when he was in the Democratic primary, think it was 1975, I was 9. My Dad voted dem for that one year because Carter was a good man of God. He deeply regretted that vote for years and Reagan success helped that bad taste he had for voting for Carter. That being said, he was a man of God at least.

Think about that. We had Americans being held illegally as prisoners by a foreign country, their lives under constant threat, and American politicians lobbied for them to be imprisoned longer in order to win an election. Carter was working for the good of the American people, and Barnes and Connolly (not sure if Reagan knew) were trying to get Americans' illegal foreign imprisonment to last longer.

Ben Barnes and John Connolly deserve to be lined up against a wall and shot. They are the most despicable villains in American history.

If you haven't read it, here's a random article, but there are a bunch out there: https://www.texasstandard.org/storie...ober-surprise/

I've always had a good impression of Reagan, but if he knew about this, he moves to the very bottom of my list of presidents.

Edit: I probably should put this in the DC version, so we can delete if needed.
Nah.

If Carter had any ability, he would have gotten them out.

He was the Matt Cassel of presidents.

I remember watching the debate with Ford when Ford said that Poland wasn't under Soviet domination. I had to have been 9 years old but remember vividly thinking Ford was delusional and Carter would win. I also remember walking to school and seeing Carter signs everywhere in yards. He was the only Democrat I remembered seeing that kind of support where I lived so he clearly had the ability to connect with all people.

I remember reading a story about how the bureaucrats had to convince him that the president needed many of the trappings of the office like a limo. He wanted to drive around DC in a pick-up truck and wear flannel and they had to persuade him that people want to see their president look like a president.

He was obviously a good man that wasn't well suited for the presidency. Probably because he was a good man.

RIP.

I forgot about that. Yeah, all the big breweries were against it, for "safety reasons".

Presidents get blamed for a lot of things they have zero control over. Gas lines? OPEC controlled world oil supplies in the 1970s. The gas lines were worse in 1973 than they were in 1979, but maybe you're not old enough to remember those. In my entire life I have never waited in a gas line of more than 4 cars.

Mortgage interest rates were far higher in the early 1980s than in the late 1970s. But presidents don't control interest rates. That is the fed.

Presidents don't control details of military operations. They give a green light or red light. If you know any of the details about Operation Eagle Claw, it was just cursed by bad luck.

Jimmy Carter had a failed presidency largely for reasons beyond his control.
