Nate Taylor: Chiefs targeting OT Ronnie Stanley in free agency

Quote:
When free agency begins, the Chiefs will target Ronnie Stanley, the nine-year veteran who is the best left tackle available on the market, according to sources. Stanley, who will turn 31 this month, started all 17 season games last season for the Baltimore Ravens. He earned a 70.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus and allowed just three sacks.

I’m on the Jaylon Moore train right now.

He’s the only one we might say “that was a great deal” to in a few years. Moore may be the cheapest option but still have some upside to create a really good value.

The best case scenario for most of these guys is that we'll look back and say “it was expensive but that’s what we had to do”.

The scheme is an obvious concern but he’s been good by most methods of evaluation in his somewhat limited action.

The **** if I know, man.

It's like people just forgot that the Ravens offense sets the Madden sliders to rookie for their OTs.

Brown was as good for them as Stanley was last season - better, in fact. Why do you guys think Rosengarten had such an easy go of it and such a successful rookie season?

Ronnie Stanley isn't some magic unicorn of a LT fellas and he's gonna look worse wherever he goes than he's looked in Baltimore.

Let’s face it, it’s a TERRIBLE time to need a LT.

The incoming draft class isn’t great, neither is the FA class.

I know the draft class sucks, but one of the draft shows I watch made a good point about the Chiefs and pick 31.

This year, with guys like Simmons, Conerly Jr., Jackson, and Ersery all in that range it's strangely a good spot in a bad class.

I know people will hate it, but I think them signing Humphries, Wills, or Smith and drafting one of those guys is as likely an option as any.

I just don't get the Robinson hate. I think he's as good a veteran LT as you'll see in FA in 80% of the classes.

And Stanley being a shinier object might drive his price down.

It's NEVER a good time to need an OT if you're drafting from the back of the round. In that regard I don't see this year as worse than most.

I went over the FA OT list awhile back and think I decided that Kelvin Beecham may have been the 3rd best FA tackle in the last decade or so? It's always bad.

And Robinson is a damn sight better than what you'll usually have available to you.

I wouldn't offer any of these FA LTs more than a 2 year deal, honestly. I don't think any of them are worth a long-term investment, including Stanley. The risk of aging and injury is too much with him. The same goes if you try bringing back Humphries or Smith. Most of the other options just aren't great from a skill perspective, at least not enough to tie yourself to that player for 4 or 5 seasons.

And with that, I'd still draft a LT prospect. Depending on the who, it may be in the 1st or it may be in the 3rd or 4th with a slightly more raw guy.

If that thought process were to lose me a guy like Stanley, so be it. I'd turn focus to the draft. Each team that picks up one of these guys in FA is a team we're less likely to have to battle to get one of the few good prospects and there aren't a ton of teams in desperation mode to get a tackle. Cleveland, New England, and KC are probably the only ones that "must" get an OT.

If you’ve paid any attention to my posts in the last few weeks that’s EXACTLY what I’m expecting them to do.

People are getting all wound up and expecting Jonathan Ogden Part II and based on Veach’s comments they aren’t going overboard with resources if they don’t think the production will match the price.

It would piss me off beyond words if we skipped on some of the DL that are going to be there to draft a raw-ass LT who Mahomes still won't trust and who won't make a ****ing bit of difference if he won't throw the goddamn football on time.

If we sign Stanley to a 2 year deal - 2 years from now the same people will say 'well Pat trusts him so we have to bring him back...' and we'll stick Conerly or whoever over at RT then use the 'freed' money to justify extending Stanley.

Nobody has the patience for a young LT and Mahomes won't get rid of the damn ball on time anyway.

So go draft one of the DL.

Maybe he had a month long case of norovirus, but dude was downright BAD the last 3-4 weeks of the season, and wasn’t great before he was dealt.

Pretty sure Thuney out-graded him. Dude got WORKED against the Lions and Rams.

Even if he’s the “cheaper” option I’m not sure he’s $16m better than DJ for a season while a pick gets up to speed.

Now, this is fair too.

My preference would be to come out of the first two rounds with a DT and a DE.

Guys been in the league for 8 years and been roughly the exact same guy for all of 'em.

He is what he is. And has always been in an offense not terribly dissimilar to ours in Jacksonville.

I just don't see any reason to believe he'll be anything worse than an average but definitely overpaid LT.
