I was probably exaggerating about how few times my kids have been out due to closings. It's probably a lot more than it ever was when I was a kid. Still, it's never nearly the same as the surrounding areas. We're always looking at all the school closings and 501 will still be in session. Like today, my nephew goes to Seaman. They're closed but my kids have to go to school because they're 501. Would've been nice if they canceled school and the Governor canceled state offices.

Second - alot of kids go to the Quinton Heights hill to sled when school is closed. The hill is right next to the 501 administration office, and the Superintendent has a view from his office of this hill. What do you think he thinks when he sees all the kids that could be in school, sledding?
If the school district honestly thinks that these kids won't eat breakfast if they are closed on a bad weather day and it is up to them to stay open to feed the kids then I think they are just a little full of themselves. As for sledding, I can see their point. If the snow is deep enough (more than 6 inches) then why not let the kids off so they can enjoy it. I am sure he was off for a snow day when he was in school and enjoyed playing in it.

They aren't full of themselves. Alot of parents don't feed their children breakfast, as they don't eat breakfast themselves.

They can enjoy snow after school, too. And during school, at recess time.

Nope he had to walk through 10 ft. for snow for 10+ miles to get to school because they NEVER closed. Don't believe me?? Just ask him!

KCFalcon59 - Tony Sawyer is the best Superintendent 501 has had in a long time. Until you've met him, I wouldn't call him out of touch with reality. He is a very knowledgable man, and very down to earth. The reasons Topekans don't like him his because he uses big words.

Oh, FWIW, their are a couple of "big" reasons 501 rarely closes. The first is because 501 does offer breakfast for parents who are too lazy to feed their kids in the morning, or are just too poor.

I can relate dude .... 475 only closes when the Post (Ft.Riley) closes.

If they close post then school buses cannot go out there so the district closes as well.

Not closing because of breakfast being served has to be one of the most assnine reasons I have evah heard. Period

I am considered essential personnel as well but we have the choice not to come in and take a vacation or personal day. My boss is pretty kewl in that respect.
