well, even if he didn't, he makes it better by being here.

Actually, he invented the Externet. It was kind of the Beta to the Internet's VHS. It's still used in a lot of developing countries, though.

Mr. Bob Dole collected and utilized a lot of the discarded BetaMax parts to constuct an interstellar transport device in his garage, Mr. crazycoffey, which he uses to locate and capture puppies abandoned on worlds outside our own galaxy. He then nurses these unfortunate animals back to health and finds them new homes with loving caregivers mainly in Alabama.

A lot of very strange looking puppies really appreciate that.

Until 6 months ago I still had a working beta player in my house.

Television still uses Betamax extensively. While the switch over to DVCPro and other digital formats is ongoing, Beta is still a good and reliable source.

Beta should have won the Beta/VHS war, but JVC (who owned VHS) sunk a ton of money into VHS and public ate it up... whereas Sony (who owned Beta) thought incorrectly that quality would triumph.

Bottom line: Beta > VHS.

yup, I know it's supposed to be better than VHS, I think the biggest problem as I understood it, People were invested into VHS tapes before many of them started to buy Beta, and as a regular consumer (just watching movies, recording games while the wife had you do other things) the cost to change was more significant than the minor difference in quality.

But I was pretty young and am going more off of what I remember my parents saying.....

That was the marketing... JVC put so much $$$ into it that everyone thought VHS was better. Most consumers don't do their research, they just go on what the TV tells them.

Name recognition is HUGE. They knew what VHS was. They didn't know what Beta was.

well if they didn't know what Beta was, it would be hard to know there was a choice.........

look at PC and MAC - Mac has some clear advantages, but are some of those advantages really needed by the average computer user?

If I want to write a book, play on this board and check email, why do I need a MAC?

I don't search through bunches of porn sites, I don't have lots of photography / editing needs, I don't write computer programs, If I want to listen to music I turn on a Radio and if I want to watch a movie, I turn on the TV......

You are not telling the quite whole story. I was selling/servicing them at the time, it was quite an issue.
It was all about recording time from the beginning. The original Beta would record 1 hour, the VHS 2 hours. Then 2/4 and then 6. The VHS was always ahead when it came to recording time and that had the consumer appeal.
Oh, and before the VHS we had the "Quasar Great Time Machine" that had a 2 hour tape that was about four times the size of the VHS tape. The unit was huge, heavy and expensive.

I didn't know which one to buy so I asked a buddy who owned a cable system. He said all of the TV stations were using VHS so they were more popular with the public.
