Yanks sign Mark teixeira

8 yr/170 million

Source: Teixeira, Yanks agree to 8-year deal

ESPN.com

Updated: December 23, 2008, 3:28 PM

Free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira has reached agreement with the New York Yankees on an eight-year contract worth more than $170 million, a source involved in the negotiations tells ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
The Yankees swooped in on Teixeira on Tuesday when it was believed the Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals were the likeliest of his future employer. The Red Sox's offer was believed to be in the range of $170 million, and the Nationals reached out with an offer perhaps greater than that of Boston.

I wanted the Angels to get him. Or someone outside of New York/Boston. Just once I wish a free agent would show some imagination and not sign with the red sox, yankees or mets. Why has nobody signed with the Rays? Granted, their revenue streams aren't even close to the NY/Boston teams, but they won the toughest division in baseball, beat the Red Sox in the ALCS, and they don't make any noise in free agency? That fanbase doesn't NEED another reason to get excited, but they'd be more than happy if you gave them one.

Sometimes I think they should add a third team in NYC. I know it will never happen, but the luxury tax does nothing to curb the Yanks or Mets spending. Put a third team in there and at least take some market share, however little it would be.
The Yankees are sickening. They have the whole NYC, NJ (millions), Long Island (millions), the counties upstate, Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany and even quite a bit of PA as media markets, not to mention nationwide bandwagon Yankee fans that watch on YES. I lived in Williamsport, PA for 3 years and saw more Yankee hats than Philly or Pirate hats.
I hate the Yankees. I hate bandwagon Yankee fans even more.

Never.

Their players union is too strong.
If the other teams start folding up like crazy then it will happen or attendance just bottoms out elsewhere...

Pettitte is currently a FA.

What would you do? Make the most money you could, or "show imagination"

Seriously. Don't blame players for doing what is smart.

what does that have to do with the overall health of the sport?

Baseball WAS America's sport ... no competition.

stupid baseball union and weak ownership just gave that away.

the fact that the players don't give a shit isn't surprising at all.

There's no ****ing commissioner in baseball. it's run by the owners. after 1994 it was no longer America's sport.
