Shawn Zobel: Lions are in serious dealings with Cassel

Inside Info

February 20th, 2009 Shawn Posted in Zobel's Blog |

I had the chance to speak with one of my sources down here in Indianapolis. Here’s what he had to say:

- The Lions are currently seriously considering dealing for Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel. According to my source, New England is “actively looking to deal him.”

- Malcolm Jenkins’ 40-yard dash is going to be one of the biggest of the Combine. If he runs a 4.5 or slower, many teams will feel that his best fit at the next level will be safety. There’s talk that he could slide to the middle-to-late first round.

- The Broncos new staff is not going to continue to draft the smaller, quicker offensive linemen. They are looking to get somewhat bigger along the offensive line.

- If Knowshon Moreno runs a 4.4 40-yard dash or faster, he could be the first running back taken…followed by Pitt’s LeSean McCoy.

- Andre Smith’s stock is dropping. Teams are not happy that he decided not to work. Based solely on today, Jason Smith is beginning to look like one of the top tackles in this year’s draft.

- The Vikings talking about keeping both Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson could mean that they plan on drafting another quarterback this year. With Josh Freeman creeping into the first round discussion, he could be an option.

If Detroit passes on Stafford this makes the decision a whole lot simpler

Dude, If they do trade for him, then the Chiefs have won the favor of the football Gods, and wearing the red, and gold is going to be envied by fans of other teams. We may be headed for territory that none of us are used to.

I'm glad I loaded up on Jerseys this off-season. Got a Bowe, Okoye, Dorsey, Holmes, and a Montana. All Authentic except the Montana. The okoye is a replithentic from the pro shop.

Got a flawless Holmes away jersey Brand new for $25.00 off of e-bay.. Bowe, and Dorsey's from Jersey 101. Authentics with the patch, but some stiych flaws on the sleeves. Not even noticeable. Being a bartender at a sports bar on Sundays, I'm gonn represent my boys this season. Everybody already calls me Chief Beal.

I hate to repeat myself, but I'm sincerely impressed by the way NE has hyped up Cassel as having such high value. You would think he's the second coming of Fran Tarkenton the way they've handled this deal. Franchising the guy was a promotional piece de resistance. Amazing.

What's going to be fascinating to me is watching which teams break down and make a play for him. I figure the following teams all might:

SF
KC
Minn
Detroit
TB
Chi
Car

I could also see a scenario where the Rams make a play, but I'd consider that a longer shot because they've got so much tied up in Bulger. Also, if it becomes public that Kansas City is making a play for him, that could open the floodgates. Other teams might figure that since Pioli knows him and made the play for him, Cassel's quite likely for real.....

I agree but Cassel has value because the supply of NFL QBs is drying up. I mean who else is there? QBs are few and far between.

There's a reason they are the model franchise of the NFL. Sure is good to have that pedigree running our team. Just to think a couple months ago, we had Cral Peterson, and Herm Edwards running it. Damn this is a huge off-season. Paired with last years draft. Good Lawd.

That would be a crafty move on Pioli's part to hint like he's interested.

Well, it would be if he weren't really interested, he wanted Stafford and thought he could get Detroit to bite.....

It's been one of the most interesting offseasons in my memory, and it's just going to get better and better until draft weekend.
