Drywall patching is cheap and easy. Then just take a chunk of the paint to Home Depot and they can color match it for you, works like a charm.

I personally would pay the $10 to open up the other side of the stud, patch the hole and have the peace of mind.

of course, while the wall is open you could always put your own camera in there....
