LJ on the hot seat?

AFC West hot seat
October 5, 2009 11:00 AM

Posted by ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson

We’re putting Larry Johnson on the hot seat.

And it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Chiefs do as well. If the team sees a viable alternative option (likely Jamaal Charles), Johnson could be in danger of losing his job.

He had 53 yards on 18 carries in a Kansas City loss to the Giants. Johnson has 189 yards on 72 carries so far this season, which is only 2.6 yards an attempt.

He's not getting great blocking from his weak offensive line, but Johnson, who turns 30 next month, isn’t creating many plays at all. If he continues to offer little, the hot seat will only get hotter.

Hes just average. Not his fault, but he makes waaay too much money to be average.

He's "average" because his OL is way below average. LJ can still play, it's his OL that can't.

I think Charles would be slightly more productive.

However, I'm not sure the marginal improvement in production would out weigh the potential fumbles lost.

Claythan is right though.

LJ was having his best game of the season, but even I can't blame him for not doing anything on those draws.

Even Barry Sanders couldn't have done anything in those situations where the LBs were there as he was getting the handoff.

The O line is with out a doubt effecting LJ, really on offense who isn't it effecting? LJ is just the only one who is going to have a verbal breakdown in public about it.

Everytime LJ gets the ball, the Defense knows he is getting it. Not only that, but our offensive line just lets them right through.

I don't really EXPECT LJ to put up any good numbers. The playcalling and team coming out of KC right now is a total joke.

I agree that the chiefs need a more agile type of RB right now, and I want to see LJ suceed on another team. I hope he goes for the betterment of both sides.

I've been very critical of LJ for a couple of years now. As recently as the Baltimore game, I was convinced that LJ was a lost cause. But I've seen more effort from him in the last two games (Oakland and NYG, I didn't see the Philly game) than I've seen in a while. The dives you are talking about were examples of LJ taking a couple of extra yards at the end of each run that he hadn't been getting before. He was going down either way, it's just a matter of trying to get a couple extra or letting himself be taken backward instead. I agree with GoChiefs on this one.

No.

He's an average back on the downside of his career.

He's never really had any vision or patience.

And he longer punishes when he does get into the second level like he did in his two good years.

It's not an either/or thing, he's lost two steps and he's playing behind a turd of a line. Suck + suck = doublesuck.

Exactly. Charles KNOWS he has to hold on to the football and he can't do it. Why? Probably because he's not physically strong enough to take a beating on a play to play basis.

Charles would have been a better option on those delay draws though.
