Too Bad The Chiefs Are Married to Todd Haley

Let me be very, very clear from the outset: the Kansas City Chiefs should not make any changes to their head coaching situation for 2010. Now with that said, let me write an entire article that seems to point to the opposite.

My primary thoughts at this time of day are spurred by the ridiculous buzz swirling current NFL head coaching wanna-bes salivating over all kinds of wonderfully desperate situations. The Redskins, Buccaneers, Bills, Bears, Browns, Raiders, Cowboys and more all sit with neon "vacancy" signs up (or pending ones, it seems) and the likes of Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren and hot assistants like Leslie Frazier (Minnesota's defensive coordinator) are all in the spotlight. And that's with a few weeks still left of the regular season.

It's the sort of rumors that fans of losing franchises love to read about, considering there's not much on-field product worth pondering. It's also something Kansas City fans must remember from this time a year ago when "what ifs" floated around Arrowhead like Rocky Mountain cloud formations. But unlike last year, this season's coaching candidates are absolutely off the charts in terms of experience, expertise and sheer reputation. And that's a shame the Chiefs cannot be in on this bunch.

Of course, the Chiefs won the grand prize last year, when the front office candidates available looked like this year's coaching hires. Scott Pioli was the head of the class, the best in the business, and when he shook hands with Clark Hunt, every KC fan (and NFL fan for that matter) knew there were much better days ahead in the City of Fountains. But the same couldn't be said of Pioli's choice for head coach.

Now, the Chiefs must sit this off-season with Todd Haley while the most beautiful head coaching class in a long time struts their stuff for teams in need. It's the equivalent of being over the salary cap next summer while having to passively watch the upcoming free agent class of 2010 in the NBA, when LeBron, Chris Bosh and others change permanent addresses. When such options are available, one can't help but wonder what it would look like for a Cowher or Shanahan to walk the sidelines of the red and gold.

We've seen unending posts both favoring Todd Haley and slamming the first-year HC. There are valid points to be made on all sides. But we are married. You don't change head coaches that quickly, so we have what we have and the absolute worst move would be to can Haley at this point. He deserves to grow with the job, to see this thing through and fans should understand that. That doesn't mean, however, that we don't look at the current dating scene and wonder what it'd be like to be single again. It's a fine class and even as a non-participant, it should be fun to watch it unfold.

Let's see....camp cupcake or camp accountability? Seems like a no-brainer to me. The Chiefs will continue to get better, some just have no patience.

It would really help if Haley would quit overthrowing wide open receivers in the end zone.

Carl had 18 years experience as a GM. He never had a rookie HC save Gunther for 2 years.

I think it only realistic to expect Pioli and Haley to have growing pains. Particularly with the POS they had given to them as a team.

What's to rationalize? It's not like it's not OBVIOUS that the team sucks, some just realize this is going to take some time. The team is coming off a 2 year win season. Anybody that expected Pioli to add 53 players that gel in one off-season, where only fooling themselves and has ZERO to do with hatred for Carl and/or Herm.

The coaching staff needs and infusion of some XP. Crennel would bring that. We would be stupid not to get him or someone similar next year. OC is going to be hard because of how heavy-handed Haley is going to be with the O.

Pioli screwed up round 1 though going for no O-line in the draft and wasting a 2nd on a career backup QB. I would have been content with Thiggy, Croyle of even Gutierez for a year while we built.

We reached even with Jackson at 3 but I think he will pan out to be a good pick. Not a 3 but a good pick.

As opposed to being professional upgrades for this franchise, utilizing sound decisions on draft day, augmenting the talent that WAS already in the house, and not firing the O-Coord and installing an entirely new offense right before the regular season, and then coaching with all of the skill and finesse of pop-warner on gameday?

YOu guys need to go back and read post number 3 in this thread. The Chances of Haley turning this thing around are remote at best.

What is to turn around? In my eyes we had plenty of chances to win 5-7 games even with questionable coaching. You can't overthrow wide open WR's, ou can't drop 7 passes a game, you can't throw 3 picks a game, you can't whiff on blocks and you can't miss tackles. You are better off viewing this as the building of an expansion franchise without the luxury of the compensatory picks and such.

Oh yea, you can't throw 2 yard passes in the middle of the field with under 2 min to go in the half\game and no TO's.

The big picture says it wasn't bad move, in my book. We landed a starting QB for a 2nd rounder-the odds of us finding a starting QB in the 2nd round last year, was SLIM.

Going by need, usually equals a reach in the draft. I commend Pioli for sticking to his guns. He also had to give Albert the benefit of the doubt.

I seriously doubt, we pick O-line with our top pick this year, as well. I don't find fault in going with who you think is the best player, at a position of need. All things being equal, the D-line needed to be addressed, every bit as much as the O-line.

I think Pioli is on the right track and his vision for the team will pay dividends in the long-run.
