We are not taking a QB in the first round

Just the official thread stating it. I'm not sure why some of you are already blowing this horn.

Just keep reading the title of this thread until it ****ing sinks in.

And I'm not even a Cassel fan, but he's going to be given more than 1 season to show he is or is not the guy.

I know all the bullshit arguments that will come forth.

"He's not a rookie, he's a seasoned vet" blah blah ****ing blah. I don't give a shit. I'm talking about reality. They gave him 60 mil. Even if Cassel never improves on this season (which I actually think he will, even if I'm not a fan), GM's don't admit to failures that quickly. Pioli will give him every chance to prove that he's right. He drafted him, he signed him to a 60 million dollar contract. Those of you you think that Pioli is going to turn right around and draft a QB with our first pick are ****ing morons. Yes, you are. It's ENTIRELY out of the question so please stop wasting discussion time with it.

Thank you and have a nice new years day.

Now we're to the point in the year where every top prospect will get knocked, this forum will beat down every QB, it happens every year.

None of them will ever be good enough to draft high.

Yea but Clausen isn't a top prospect I've even seen you say that before. Cassel is going to get 2 more years no matter what I would prefer drafting a QB in the 3rd or 4th round cut that shit Brodie Croyle and develope said QB. Cassel will be 30 or 31 then you can dump him.

We aren't going to develop a 4th round pick into a starting QB, not with this staff, and the odds of it even with a good staff are slim and none.

We're stuck with Matt Cassel start praying he magically becomes good or we're gonna suck for several more years.

And drafting a QB in the first round when we're paying a QB 60 mil isn't a possibility either. The best bet would be for Pioli to make an aggressive move for a guy like Marshall or Boldin. Cassel would be guarnteed to succeed.

That is not entirely true, he could be awful with good players around him. He's missed wide open guys pretty consistently this year.

If the Chiefs were the Redskins drafting a QB wouldn't be out of the question because they have the cap space to eat Cassel's contract but we are a cheap franchise so it won't happen here.

Cassel put up pretty good numbers in New England so I think its fair to say if there was stud talent he would do ok. The question is can Pioli bring in the talented? The problem with New England is they made some great moves that were risky and happend to pay off.

You should look at how Cassel put up those numbers, if you are a fan of throwing WR screens all game, he's the ticket.

Nonsense.

When we're 100 percent guaranteed to be out of position to draft player X, he'll be good enough. See: Stafford.

Yes, some argued we should select him from the start, but that dude also was bashed regularly on this forum. Then, magically, the waters shifted.

I was all for taking a QB at 3 if there was one on the board worth the pick. Unfortunately there wasn't. At least not in my mind, 'cause I didn't like the idea of Sanchez with a single year in college under his belt any more than I liked the idea of Cassel with a year in the NFL under his. Liked it even less, in fact. Which is saying something, because I really, really, really didn't want them to trade for Cassel. And while I agree in principle with the value of a franchise quarterback, I'm not any more a fan of reaching for what I saw as a mid- or low-first guy like Sanchez at 3 than I would be reaching for someone like Curry or Crabtree. Or Jackson.

Either way, I still think we were boned by the Cassel story coming out. It killed any and all existing (or imaginary) leverage we had for trading out of our spot.

As for 2010, I don't know that I see one I'd take at 3 this year, either, but I'm not really in draft mode yet. I don't actually think Cassel being under contract precludes the possibility of drafting another QB, but I don't know who that would be, if we're talking about the 3rd pick. Clausen for me would be the only possibility, and while I'm not enamored with him, I don't know that he'll make it to 3 anyway. I certainly wouldn't take Bradford.

I think in the end it's another situation like last year where regardless of who we take and where he plays, it's going to be a huge upgrade, so I don't think there needs to be a desperate focus on any single position. Including quarterback. Take the guy who's highest on your board and move on.

Stafford has completely exceeded Sweet Dick's expectations. Sweet Dick was wrong about Matthew Stafford.

When you suck you don't pick for need, you pick to build up your talent. Pick the best player available, regardless of position. Don't forget they will also be picking at 35, Atlantas pick around 48,and again at 67.

If we were talking about a 5th year senior who had started for 4 years and broke a million records, had no mechanics issues, and no injury history then it'd be good enough. In other words, if Manning was out there yeah. But the fact is most juniors that come out fail and fail miserably. No junior is ever worth taking as far as I am concerned because the failure rate in junior QB's is so high.
