On the cheap but still having a lot of fun,I'd check out the aforementioned Imperial Palace or Harrah's and also add The Flamingo.I'd also get me a Harrah's rewards card if you're doing any gambling at all,imo their comp program is 2nd to none.
Definitely check out O'Shea's on the corner across from Margaritaville which is next to the Flamingo.Awesome little place with really good live music, gambling and a food court with a Subway i.e. $5 Footlongs. Also have a little midget who comes out and sells shots along the bar and gets the crowd reved up.I'll post a pic. On the other side of Flamingo is Bill's Gambling Hall which has restaurant in it which as of last year had a $5.49 steak, eggs and hashbrowns breakfast starting at midnight till 6 a.m. Treasure Island also has a free show that lasts about 15-20 minutes in front of their place that's worth checking out with a cold drink in hand. Again, this is all on the cheap and if gambling I'm a big fan of the video poker machines at the bar in The Flamingo. The bartenders are great and generous and you don't have to spend a fortune to get free drinks. Lastly do a web search for Las vegas coupons, last year I found buy 1 get 1 frees on Nathan's Hot dogs Hagen Dazz ice cream and more. Here's the pic from O'Shea's

A word from the wise for you Vegas n00bs. Don't try to do and see everything in one trip. It is impossible. Also, other than a show or two, don't make concrete plans for anything. Just go with the flow. It will make your time there much more enjoyable.
My wife and I have been to Vegas 10 times and I have been 4 times prior to when I met her. We STILL have not done everything we want to do there.

Follow that link, promo code PFSTL. You can get Flamingo standard rooms (nice, clean) for $35/night during the week or the new renovated GO rooms for a little more. The GO rooms are really sweet with a plasma screen TV and even a TV in the bathroom mirror that appears when you turn it on. The Flamingo is also in a prime location. It's next door to the Imperial Palace that someone mentioned earlier, but the Imperial Palace is pretty crusty. Definitely go to the VooDoo lounge at the Rio. It's an outside rooftop club that overlooks the entire strip. It's the one thing I'd say you really don't want to miss. Also, I'm not sure of your age, but most of the hotels now have "day clubs" at their swimming pools with music, dancing, and some that allow topless sunbathing. It's really fun, but leave time for a nap. We got exhausted by getting drunk during the day and then trying to go out at night with no nap in between. It can be hard to balance the day partying and night partying. Last edited by Time's Yours; 03-03-2010 at 10:14 AM.. |

So many good suggestions. Here's mine from our trip last week:
We stayed at Bally's mid-week and got the rooms for $26 a night on the Allegiant Air website when we booked the flight. It's centrally located, a little bit older, but clean. We didn't spend much time sleeping, so it worked out well wrt location as we were right in the middle of the strip. If you stay there, ask for the free upgrade and they'll get you a room in the North Tower. We were upgraded to a suite, which far exceeded my expectations. ![]() Wear comfortable shoes and ignore those bastards handing out the cards on the strip. It annoyed me at first, but I just ignored them. Bill's restaurant has a great breakfast that Nzoner pointed out. An even better breakfast can be had at Magnolia's. It's in the Four Queens downtown. The overhead show downtown is worth seeing as well. This was my first trip and I liked both the strip and the downtown area equally. I like Black Jack, so the games were definitely cheaper downtown and you get more of the old Vegas feel there. Not sure I'd stay there though, even with the cheaper rates. We played at almost every table/casino we could find. There was even a cigar shop downtown that made my chocolate cigars on site, so I was in heaven. Wynn, Encore, Bellagio, Caesar's Palace, MGM, Aria, City Center, etc. are all great and I will be staying at one of those fine establishments in the future, but this trip was simply to gain some experience with the area. The Harrah's Total Rewards Card is a must, the comps are by far the best. We did the Hoover Dam thing too and hit the little casinos on the way out there (Railroad Pass, The Station, Sam's Town, etc.) The locals go to Sam's Town a lot as the payout is better there, but it's definitely an older crowd. And yes, I made a little wager on the Chiefs for the playoffs, AFC Championship, and SB. They were only $5 bets, so I'm not out anything, but it was fun to make the bet anyway. ![]() |

I'm not a high roller gambler by any means and have already made it to Platinum status and have 5 comped nights coming on my next trip to Vegas plus I get 4 nights(my choice) a month at the KC Harrah's as well as free valet parking and an average of $85 per month in free gambling certificates that have to be used at either slots or video poker.

I'll be there right after you (arriving on the 17th). I have enough advice for pages of comments, so I'll pick just a few.
1. Harrah's shuttle - Harrah's owns 7 casinos in Vegas and runs a shuttle between them. It's a good way to get to the RIO and back should you go there. (You'll need a Harrah's card) 2. Free shows - Several casinos have free shows and exhibits that you can see. Bellagio Fountains - Outdoor Caesar's Fountains - Indoor Freemont Street Experience - Downtown MGM Grand - Lion Habitat RIO - Show in the sky (casino floor...err sky) Mirage - Volcano eruption Treasure Island - Sirens of TI There are plenty more, but you get the idea 3. Poker - If you are a poker player, the Sahara offers a nice little tournament 3 times a day (11a, 7p, 11p) There are many great poker rooms, and many much nicer than this...but when the cards hit the felt it is an issue of buy-in and tournament structure. This is a mid to deep stack tourney for about $70 if I remember correctly. 4. Cirque du Soleil - You either love them or are disinterested. We love them. Add in the Beatles and 'LOVE' at the Mirage is a good bet. They have 7 permanent shows I think...I have seen 5 to date. 5. Freemont Street (downtown) - It's worth a look around at least once. I don't gamble much there, and only return when I am 'showing' it to someone anymore. Prices are definitely cheaper. 6. Lodging and food - I can't really help you much here (although I see some suggested in the thread that seem good). I gamble too much at home and get most of this comped when I go to Vegas. Don't be afraid to sign up for the various rewards cards and don't be afraid to ask for gimmes for signing up (i.e. a free buffet). I remember being surprised at how much free stuff we got at Planet Hollywood just for signing up. Well, thats enough! Have a great time.

My wife won a trip to Vegas last April to go to the Country Music Awards show. They put us up in the MGM. We got there before our room was ready so we were offered a "free upgrade" to a room in the West Wing.
I wasn't impressed with our upgrade at first because the rooms were nothing special and the hallways to the rooms are dark and kind of dingy. However, we soon found that they had a major advantage because the West Wing gets its own elevator and it dumps you right out on the strip. The other rooms all share a bank of elevators and they get really crowded plus you then have to wind around the hotel to get out. Until you go to Vegas, you have no concept at how big these places are. We don't gamble, so we spent our spare time just checking out the sights. We did a ton of walking, especially since the MGM is at one end of the strip. We really enjoyed Bellagio, Palazzo, the Venitian, NY NY and Paris. The volcano in front of the Mirage was kind of cool. The Sirens show at TI was cheesy but fun. The fountains and birds at the Flamigo was surprisingly cool and was a nice respite from the crowds and noise. The only pay things we did were the shark reef at Mandalay Bay and we went up in the Eiffel Tower. Both of them were worth doing. We didn't do any of the shows because we only had one night free and we spent that out on the Strip. The first night we were there, they took us to Fremont St for a street concert. I was less than impressed and the place was so packed that you could barely go anywhere. The neon museum down there was kind of cool but not really worth going there just for that. |
