Chiefs buzz: Croyle lacking game action

Chiefs buzz: Croyle lacking game action

Practice isn’t like a game

Quarterback Brodie Croyle hasn’t played in a game since the preseason and now will probably start Sunday’s game against the Chargers in place of Matt Cassel. As much practice as the Chiefs give Croyle — it’s a considerable amount this week, but normally not much — practice isn’t the same as a game because it’s conducted at a much slower speed.

The Chiefs in recent weeks had several chances to get Croyle playing time. They fell hopelessly behind the Broncos in Denver a month ago and since then held sizable leads against the Cardinals and Seahawks in the fourth quarter.

In each case, coach Todd Haley kept Cassel in the game.

“With where you are in some of those games, you’re not going to be throwing the football,” Haley said. “I don’t know that you’re not getting some of the same things in practice.”

Cassel didn’t practice again Thursday after having an appendectomy a day earlier. Unless the Chiefs break one of Haley’s rules, Cassel would have to practice today to play in San Diego.

“The policy is you have to have some semblance of practice,” Haley said. “We’ll see as the week plays out exactly where we are. Right now we’ve got two days under our belt, and we’ve got two more left.”

Getting the ball to Bowe

The Chiefs failed to get the ball to wide receiver Dwayne Bowe in last week’s game against Denver, and it’s probably no coincidence they scored only 10 points in beating the Broncos. The Chargers undoubtedly took note of the connection and will probably make a similar effort to take Bowe out of the game.

“That can’t be something that we allow to happen one way or another,” Haley said. “It’s our job as coaches to find ways to help the receivers. It’s the receiver’s duty to continue to step his game up against the competition and make plays. That’s what I fully expect from Dwayne. He’s trying to continue to make steps to being a really good player in the league, and this is the next step for him, going against really good competition that knows he’s one of the guys that gets the football a bunch.”

Wiegmann can relate

Center Casey Wiegmann missed the final exhibition game and the regular-season opener in 2001 after having an appendectomy in a procedure similar to Cassel’s.

“It took me a couple of weeks,” Wiegmann said. “They didn’t want to rush me back too fast. I could have played in one week, but they just didn’t want to risk it for the rest of the year.”

Injury report

The Chiefs made one change to their practice report. They said reserve defensive back Donald Washington (ankle) was limited in practice. He didn’t practice the day before.

Safety Kendrick Lewis (ankle) was also limited. Cassel was the only other player listed, and he didn’t practice because of what the Chiefs continued to call an illness.

That may be somewhat motivating at this point in his career, Mr. Chiefnj2, but he kept coming back from somewhat nasty injuries in college. I think the boosters were only giving him about 50k a year back then.

Personally, I think he loves to play the game.

I may have forgotten one.
1.) The moniker "manager" implies that managing a game isn't playing "good". The reality is that every NFL QB is supposed to be managing the game.

2.) When Tom Brady was making the New York Jets team his bitch on Monday, he was "just a high priced manager". He was throwing short-medium passes pretty much exclusively, and avoiding interceptions. Seems to me that he had a "good" game anyway.

In other words, your use of the terms "manager" and "good" is lousy, and designed to beg the question.

I leave that to the idiots who can't be bothered with honest evaluation.
Let me help you here, I didn't play Jr. College football, but I have been watching this team for 41 years, so I picked up a couple things.

1) When the center snaps the ball to #7, and from the snape #7 stares at one receiver until he throws it to him, or gets sacked still looking at that one receiver, or throws a pick while throwing to that same receiver, without looking at any other potential receivers, that is called not progressing through his reads (looking for alternative target to throw to), Follow?

As I have said numerous times, I think he did a great job on this in the Seattle game, it gave me wood just seeing that improvement. Not so good in the Denver game last week, but hey, everyone has a bad day. I hope he plays like the Seattle game every time, but so far he hasn't.

2) For the most part, his accuracy the last two years has been horrible, atrocious, receivers had to be double jointed. But that also has been looking better the last three games IMO.

Sure it does. If the play calls for Cassel to only read one route and then to check down if the receiver is deemed covered, it means the coaching staff doesn't trust Cassel to make multiple reads and make a decision quickly enough. The other case is pretty obvious and leads to the 'tunnel vision' conclusion. How about addressing the other things I listed now?

Both of this assertions are assuming 100% accuracy when there are plenty of other possibilities, which is why they are wrong. There are plays that actually call for a quick look one way and then a "check down", and every team in the NFL has them.

Like HemiEd, you're seeing what you want to see.

This is the problem with people who have been "watching this team for 41 years". They think they know what the hell they are talking about just because of the duration of their fandom.

Just a heads up here.... while QB rating is not a perfect mirror of QB play, it's pretty difficult to achieve a 98.4 rating, over the course of 3/4 of a season, on the strength of just two games.

Also, every QB locks on to receivers. Sometimes it's a problem, sometimes it's inherent in the play.

Oddly enough, most people can watch a game and figure at least a few things out. You seem to have avoided even the blind squirrel sorts of fortune.

I give up, enjoy the game if you watch this one.

But at least try and listen to the announcers, their explanations may help you.
