Sac's February Mock - Best Yet!

It’s officially Haley’s team now. Bill Muir is the official OC/OL coach and Haley is who’ll be calling the plays. He’s going to build this sumabitch the way he wants it built. That means getting the right guys in to do the job.

1. Anthony Costanzo, OT; Boston College: 6’7”, 305 lbs.
- Haley is tired of having to put Albert on an exercise bike at the start of every training camp. He wants mobile, athletic tackles for his zone scheme and Costanzo, a four year starting tackle and first team All American fits the bill perfectly.



2. Christian Ponder, QB; Florida State: 6’2”, 220 lbs.
- Haley rides Matt Cassel like a Leadville donkey. He wants a smart, poised quarterback that can make quick reads. Cassel isn’t that guy. Ponder is. Already working on his PhD in business (got his bachelors and masters in under four years), Ponder is athletic, has a nice arm and has excellent pocket and field awareness. Visions of Kurt Warner are dancing through Haley’s head.



3. Jerrell Powe, NT; Ole Miss: 6’3”, 335 lbs.
- To get Pioli and Crennel off his back, he picks the Ole Miss nose tackle, team captain and teammate of current Chiefs Dexter McCluster and Kendrick Lewis. Powe has great size for the NT and will fill the two-gap position effectively.



4. Austin Pettis, WR; Boise State: 6’3”, 205 lbs.
- Haley has his Boldin in Dwayne Bowe, now he needs his Fitzgerald. Pettis isn’t exactly Fitz, but he runs great routes, extends for the ball, has hands of glue and knows how to find the end zone. He’s also a pretty good open field runner. Should be an excellent possession receiver.



5. Jake Kirkpatrick, C; TCU: 6’2”, 300 lbs.
- The 2010 Rimington Award winner, Kirk was also a 2nd team AA. Deceptively strong with good quicks, an excellent zone blocking center prospect.



6. Mike Mohammed, LB; California: 6’3”, 240 lbs.
- Mohammed is a tough, smart guy that only missed one game his entire career. Has good size and a frame to add more, he is athletic enough to play either inside or outside. Has a great nose for the ball in both the pass and run. Finished his career with fourth most tackles in school history.



7. Rob McGill, OT; Louisiana Tech: 6’6”, 310 lbs.
- Three-time all-conference player who has started since his freshman season. Very good run blocker in addition to having good footwork in pass protection. He won’t remind anyone of former Bulldog Willie Roaf right off the bat, but there’s a lot of tools to work with and develop.

Yeah. I'm not sure how I feel about drafting a RT in the first (and that's what Costanzo would be - Albert isn't going anywhere), there are worse things I guess, but, either way, there's no chance they draft a QB anywhere remotely high.

And I think waiting until the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds to fill what may be the team's biggest holes is a mistake.

The Powe pick I'm good with.

I'd rather go with skill positions higher in the draft, and big bodies later, with the possible exception of center.

'course all of this is really moot until free agency, if there is free agency...

The reality is, while Albert isn't as bad as Sac paints him, he also isn't as good as others think he is.

His progression has stunted, and he either needs to take a huge leap in progression, or he does need to be replaced.

The other reality is that we have so many other holes, looking for his replacement this year is really not a priority, unless we can plug a number of holes elswhere in free agency.

Agree with all of that. And I'm not sure Muir isn't the biggest issue, although I really think that Waters and Wiegmann's declining play are both bigger problems than Albert, and I'm not sure that they both don't detrimentally impact his performance in the passing game. I'm not exactly Lilja's biggest fan either, but there's already someone in house that can replace him. Right tackle continues to be a problem.

But I also think these are all things that can be worked out in free agency. And I don't think that the skill positions can. We've cycled waver wire receivers in and out of the lineup for two years. It hasn't worked. At all. The nose can't be fixed in free agency, either, I don't believe. I think the only line position I'd spend a pick on at this point is center, and maybe a flex guy late. We need starters to plug in at this point, and I'd rather see vets. Find a RT in march.

I think the best draft value at this point comes from players with the ability to make impact plays. And that's not Costanzo. Give me a reciever or a linebacker or even an NT (a pick that could conceivably make the greatest impact on the team of anyone...). Hell, I might even be in favor of a younger runner to take Jones' place in the 3rd or 4th.

Those are things you generally can't find on the waiver wire...

not knocking your mock Sac, just sayin' we should all give up on the prospect of this team, at the least, ever trying to get a player at the QB position.

I'd be fine overall with this draft, we would be taking a QBOTF prospect and pickup a lot of key pieces that look decent at first glance. If we could get a deal for Fitz or a decent other WR I'd like this draft alot.

Maybe its just me, but I dont like Costanzo period. He wasnt exactly impressive vs actual competition on defense. He was playing guard in the Senior Bowl.

And to answer your question, No. He was moved from RT to LT because he sucked complete ass at RT.

What? Are you sure you were watching Boston College games? He was the best player on the field for BC in their bowl game this year and has always been very impressive every time I've seen BC games over the past three years. I'm sure that the guys who put him on almost every single 2010 All-American team probably didn't know as much as you in terms of evaluating talent.

He was playing guard in the Senior Bowl as they were moving guys around at a number of positions.

And he has enough skill and talent to have been put in as the starter at right tackle as a freshman at Boston College, even though he only weighed 265 lbs. at the time. He got moved over to left tackle his sophomore year and started every game there for three straight years. In addition, Boston College does run a pro style zone blocking set, which is why you see a lot of their offensive linemen acclimate rather quickly to the pros. And as Costanzo is one of the highest regarded BC linemen ever, I think he's got a decent shot at being able to contribute sooner rather than later and at a higher level than a lot of the linemen in this draft.

I really wouldn't put too much stock into the actual Senior Bowl game. It's always been a defensive lineman showcase versus the offensive line and not a real true measure of evaluating talent, especially the O-line.

Costanzo is a pure left tackle at the next level, and he'd immediately be a better option than what we are currently parading out there on Sundays.

Costanzo is, imo, a finesse blocker. He's going to have all kinds of trouble against speed and bull rushes. No ****ing thank you.

I'm not a fan of Costanzo at all.

Based on his mouth foaming declaration of how amazing Okung would be I'd be a bit leery of this guy on Sac's boner alone...

Okung had a very good rookie year. Completely shut down Hali in their matchup. The guy will be a very good pro.

Costanzo is not an Okung/Thomas level player.

However, he is a very good offensive lineman that is very smart, has an excellent work ethic, has a very good skill set (hands and feet are very good with an excellent kick step) and is quite athletic for a guy his size. He's got a ton of experience at the left tackle spot in a pro style set. There are worse draft picks that the Chiefs could make and with the top receivers and OLB's likely off the board by the 21st pick and no NT or C (and Wisniewski is not a true center - he played guard for Penn State) worthy of a first round pick, OT will be a very viable selection at that point in the draft with Costanzo being the player with the most upside in this system IMO. (If he is available at that point.) Considering the Chiefs struggles at that position for the past five years plus, a top quality offensive tackle is a very good value at the 21st pick for this team.

Costanzo, Carimi, Sherrod all have extensive starting experience and would be viable picks. I wouldn't even mind the upside of a Tyron Smith there either.

It's the second rounder that is going to present quite the conundrum for the Chiefs front office/coaching staff. There is going to be a lot of players at that spot that the Chiefs could use.
