If the Mount Evans road is open, that's a cool drive, and strap your helmet on and get a rental car with power.
Go to Manitou Springs (about an hour south) and take the cog railroad to the top of Pike's Peak. Estes Park is indeed very nice. Those would be my top three recommendations for one day in Colorado.
