Chiefs & Pats Ask to Talk W/McDaniels

Apparently the Chiefs and Patriots asked the Rams permission to talk to McDaniels according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Let the games begin.

Yes, Pioli thought Cassel was a franchise QB. That doesn't mean that after 3 underwhelming years, he can't change his mind.
Why provide no competition either then?

Sounds like a ton of wishful thinking on your part.

NFL network is pretty much presenting it like McDaniels in NE is a done deal.

I wouldn't go that far out on the limb, but I'm sick and tired of the Chiefs building an excellent nucleus and letting it flush down the toilet by neglecting obvious problems. DV should have won a couple of SBs with that offense here had he and CP bothered to build a defense to go along with it. Now we are building a solid D and have all the ingredients for a good O EXCEPT FOR A ****ING QB!!! By the time Pioli admits his mistake or gets fired for his Cassel man-love the rest of this team will have gone to crap.

Isn't this only speculation? Why is everybody posting like it's a fact?

2010 was NOt an underwhelming season. At least on paper.

I also believe he is a step up from a Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson.

Just sayin...
Not that big a step up. But the era of winning championships with mediocre QBs is over. This is a much more QB driven league than when Dilfer and Johnson played.

Yeah we put a QB behind the center that has some semblance of an NFL QB.

Belichick is to McDaniels as Parcells was to Haley. The guy wants you, you go there no questions asked. They're close.

The noise for McDaniels to KC was really loud, but Michael Lombardi kept banging on his idea that McDaniels may not necessarily see KC as the best fit. He's still young. He goes back to NE, gets five more years with Brady, rebuilds his reputation, then if Belichick decides to hang it up, he steps in and takes over. If you are McDaniels, that's probably a far better scenario than hoping things work out in KC with a fanbase you know is going to hate you from the get go...

More Josh McDaniels Talk (Chiefs Haven't Talked To Rams Edition)
by Joel Thorman on Jan 7, 2012 9:00 AM CST

0 COMMENTS EMAIL PRINT
As usual, the NFL coaching rumor mill is a cluster-you-know-what and we're seeing contradictory reports.

On Thursday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported via a "well-placed league source" that the Chiefs have reached out to the Rams seeking permission to speak with Josh McDaniels.

Also on Thursday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Chiefs have not reached out to the Rams seeking permission to speak with Josh McDaniels.

Wait, what?

Exactly.

Bryan Burwell, Thursday afternoon: "A well-placed league source says both the Patriots and Chiefs have reached out to the Rams to seek permission to talk to McDaniels, but no word on if the Rams gave it."

Jim Thomas, later on Thursday afternoon: "Goodbye Josh from Stl. Pats move fast on McDaniels. Rams signed permission form only 1 hour ago. Kansas City yet to request permission."

Some Post-Dispatch-on-Post-Dispatch crime here.

More importantly to us, the KC Star's Adam Teicher is reporting the Chiefs have not made a move to talk with McDaniels so it sounds like that's the accurate take. The Star's Sam Mellinger previously reported McDaniels would not be interviewed for the head coaching job in KC (but potentially could for offensive coordinator). The current signs point to McDaniels landing in New England but we shall see.

And Teicher's story this morning talks about Jack Del Rio interviewing in KC but we're told he will not be the next Chiefs head coach. (Hope this isn't my Nick Saban moment.)

Why sign Orton? I know we couldn't go on with Palko, but why not bring in a QB that wouldn't have a chance to unseat Cassel? We could have brought in anumber of washed up QBs sitting at home that could be signed for a few weeks and dumped, and that would have been cheaper.

I think Cassel very well could be the QB next season, but if the coach believes someone else is better, I don't think Pioli is forcing them to start him.

I'm on the fence about signing Orton. I prefer him to Cassel by leaps and bounds, but if we sign him AND KEEP CASSEL, guys like Stanzi or anyone we draft late in this draft will never see the field. The only way I want us to sign Orton is if we actually cut ties with Cassel.

Yes, and if Pioli wanted no competition for Cassel he wouldn't have bothered bringing in Orton.

There is no way Orton resigns with Cassel still on the roster. He'd be better off to sign with a team that has an unsteady young QB that could take a step back or a team caught without a QB for next year.

Actually, he'd be better off signing here, because he can easily beat out Cassel and he isn't going to have these kind of weapons anywhere else.
