Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

I am in full agreement with you O.city.

Reid is arguably the best QB coach in the entire league and we're gonna destroy him the day of the draft, without seeing how the QB he picks will do, simply because he didn't pick "your guy"?

Sounds pretty lame to me.

Any talk of Joeckel should be gone...looked completely ordinary today.

Would love to hear what that troll Matt Miller has to say.

This is what I've been saying. GREAT post.

I was on the Sanchez bandwagon.

But I believed then, and stil do believe, that sitting him on the bench for a year, or even more ideallyn for 2 years was the way to develop him.

I said then that starting him right away was recipe for failure.

We'll never know if my plan to develop him was right.
But by the same token, we'll also never know if I was wrong either.

I never boarded the Clausen bandwagon.

I don't have "a guy". I've voiced opinions for Geno, Barkley, Wilson. TBH, if I had a guy at this point it would probably be Barkley.

If Reid decides to go the way the Chiefs have always gone, which has shown to be extremely less successful than the way other teams have done it, I'll be pretty disappointed. I'm tired of the Chiefs not prioritizing the QB position. This is all about a guy I want them to pick, it's about a philosophy.

I thought Reid was this QB guru and he has had some success with them, but when you take McNabb away, it gets a little pedestrian.

Again, someone show me this top player we should take. Everyone says "I'd rather take a top player, then take the 4 or 5 best Qb".

Who is this player? I'm all ears for that if said player is more impactful than a QB.

Enough playing risk with the most important position in sports.
I don't know. But, I agree, I'd you're not crazy about any QB trade for Foles, and I think they would then draft a guy in the later rounds as well.

IMO Reid will like multiple QB's in this class. I think Geno, Barkley and Wilson are for sure guys he will like.

I think a guy Nassib could also be on that list too. He has all the tools.

I mean, if you think a guy can be the face of your franchise and a successful QB, would you not draft him at 1? If you feel that way about a guy, why take a chance and not get him by allowing 31 other teams have a chance at him?

I just don't have alot of confidence that they feel that way about a guy they give a chacne to be taken elsewhere and hope he's there at 34. So by taking a guy at 34, to me, says we don't think he can be that guy, but he might be.

If that be the case, I'd rather just trade for Foles and let that play out.

No one is more important than a QB, but if they feel there isn't a QB that they plan on starting right away, and will win for them, they shouldn't take a guy just to take a guy if they don't believe I him.

Thats what I'm saying, if they don't feel a guy is worth that at 1, why would they at 34, knowing how important that position is?

It's a unique situation because we really don't have (if they re sign Bowe and Albert) a position of need that is normally taken that high, other than QB.

And just me, I'd rather reach on a QB on the chance he could be a franchise guy than take a guard at 1.
