Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

Geno and Foles can braid hair on the bench with Stanzi.

I'm okay with drafting the BPA, but who can actually indentify, who that may end of being?(in the long run). I have kind of come to the realization, we probably won't draft a QB with the first pick, but I could see us doing it in the second or third. I'm willing to field a team that probably won't win the division, but if good players are added this year, and next year, then I expect us to be right in the middle of the hunt for the division crown the following year. We need a whole lot of quality players, hopefully this new regime can indentify those players!

The only non-QB's mocked to KC may not even be the best players at their respective positions, but they are labeled as safe and can't miss. It's pathetic.

Truthfully from what I saw yesterday at the combine and the senior bowl I think Eric fisher is better than jokel.

If that scenario happened and I wasn't able to trade down I probably resign bowe and Albert . I either take fisher or take Alabama cb

I fully expect this to happen. I believe we will sign/trade for Nick Foles and draft either Barkley, Bray, or Wilson in the 2nd and Cassel will be asked to take a major pay cut or he will be released. Depending on what happens w/ Cassel, Quinn or Stanzi will either be cut or will be given 1-yr deals (or however long Stanzi has left on his deal).

Albert will move to guard if we draft Joeckel. That's going to piss off a lot of the armchair GM's here at Chiefsplanet, but that's what will happen. Either that or Joeckel will play guard which would piss off even more CP armchair GM's. 1 of the 2 will happen if Albert is resigned and Joeckel is drafted at 1-1.

1. OT Joeckel
2. QB Barkley/Bray/Wilson
3. QB Nick Foles trade
3. CB David Amerson

Rounds 4-7 I'd go in this order:
4. RB Lattimore or OLB Jones (if he's drops to this spot)
5. ILB Klein
6. CB Mathieu

BUT....if this spinal thing is going to have Jones drop really far and even into the 2nd day I think you absolutely take that gamble in the 4th rd instead of Lattimore.

And I also think we go for another QB next season as well.

Yeah, it seems like a toss up to me. I'd be on board with Millner, a top player at a need area. I know CBs don't go 1.1, but neither do Gs and Warmack has been getting buzz too.

I don't believe you're open to having it proved to you, but anyone who watches football should know that the move from tackle to guard isn't that uncommon. Going the other way is more so. Robert Gallery and Leonard Davis are the two examples that come immediately to my mind because they were both drafted in the top 5 to be LT but ended up finding their most success at G. Wade Smith is another example. Shawn Andrews went from college tackle to NFL guard and then, at the end of his career, out to NFL LT.

I looked at the first and third rounds of drafts from 2003 to 2007 (your 10 year window minus the most recent 5 years because those careers haven't had time to develop yet). There were 4 guys drafted as tackles in the first round during that stretch who ended up playing guard (Gallery, Andrews, Vernon Carey, and Chris Williams). All of them except for Andrews started out their NFL careers as tackles and Andrews finished his as one. There were 7 guys drafted in the third round as tackles who ended up playing guard at least to some extent. One of those guys was Eric Winston so his guard play was minimal. The others, including Wade Smith, spent more significant time at guard.

You don't need your first overall pick be an attempt to improve a guard spot.

Any way you slice it letting Albert go or moved to guard and taking a LT at 1.1 is not going to be full value. That's the irony of all this talk about Joeckel being the value pick. Picking a guy to fill a position you have a guy to fill isn't value. Adding skill at the guard position with an Albert move doesn't equal the value of what we can get in the 2nd round with CB ect.
If they were to let Albert go and draft those two (1. Joeckel, 2. Tyler Wilson), they'd still have the resources to sign a FA because they didn't use them to resign Albert. So they could potentially fill that CB/S/WR/LB position from FA.
