The Alex Smith to #Chiefs trade is now official. 49ers get 2nd round pick plus conditional 2014 pick. Chiefs get starting QB

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers will acquire an undisclosed 2013 draft choice, and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, in return for sending QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs. Smith must pass a physical in Kansas City for the trade to be executed.

“We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Originally the first overall draft pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by San Francisco, Smith spent eight seasons in the red and gold. During his tenure with the 49ers, he started 75 of the 80 games in which he played, completing 1,290 of 2,177 pass attempts (59.3%) for 14,280 yards and 81 TDs.

In 2012, Smith was 6-2-1 as a starter, completing 153 of 218 pass attempts (70.2%) for 1,737 yards with 13 TDs and 5 INTs, and a QB rating of 104.1. In 2011, Smith led the 49ers to their first NFC West title and postseason berth since 2002. He threw for a career-high 3,144 yards on 273 of 445 pass attempts with 17 TDs, 5 INTs and a 90.7 QB rating.

Born in Seattle, WA, Smith attended Helix High School in LaMesa, CA. At the University of Utah, Smith boasted a 21-1 record as a starter and became the first player in school history to be named a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

I don't believe it's a flawed strategy when a team has had ten losing seasons out of the past fifteen and no playoff wins in 20 years.

The Chiefs are not in a position to just say "Super Bowl or Bust". They've lost the trust of the fans, the fans that fill the stadium, and if HUGE changes weren't made, they were looking at not only an empty stadium but blackouts.

This situation isn't just any simple ordinary situation. This franchise has basically been a gigantic cluster**** since 1971. Sure, the Marty years were "nice" but anything since then has been an illusion.

They're back to Square One, which is to try to put a team on the field that isn't embarrassing to the fans or the city.

It sucks but it is what it is.

Who is suggesting that the team would win a SB next year or the year after?

Everyone realizes that it will take multiple years for this team to contend because there are holes on the roster that can't be fixed by 2nd and 3rd tier FAs.

We should be laying the foundation for the future of the team now, and that foundation comes from drafting and developing a QB. As he develops, you fill the holes. Once he's ready the team is as well.

They are parallel growth lines.

When looking for a QB you need to ask yourself if the player is capable of leading a team to the SB. If he isn't, there is no reason to spend anything on acquiring him unless he's a backup.

Reid and Dorsey's job should be to win a Super Bowl. If they don't feel that there is a QB available in 2013 who can win a SB, that's an acceptable decision, but by committing to Alex Smith and constructing the rest of the team in the style they have, they've essentially said that there is no QB worth it in 2014 and possibly 2015.

It's a classic example of not being able to see the forest for the trees.

It will make the team better in 2013, but that's the equivalent of taking out a cash advance on a credit card to pay your mortgage every month.

I happen to think that Geno Smith can win a Super Bowl, but I understand that such a belief is not a consensus, so passing on him, although a poor decision in my mind, is defensible.

What isn't defensible is picking up a QB that I believe almost no one thinks can win a Super Bowl, because it makes acquiring a truly elite one more difficult.

They are betting their reputations and the fortunes of this team on the notion that the next two drafts don't have a franchise quarterback in them AT ALL.

We have to have hope that there are 3 teams that want to move up for Geno and that they believe the Jaguars will take him at 2...otherwise, our pick doesn't hold much weight.

The only problem is that with this draft, you're asking a fan base that's suffered through years of shit (and an outright rebellion in 2012) to suffer through more years because they want to "try" to develop a guy to lead them to the Super Bowl someday.

I'm sorry, but that's a lot to ask of the average fan. It's why Royals Stadium is continually empty and it's a bad strategy for the Chiefs in 2013.

With a rooky QB take the lumps of growing with him first couple years and then the third year should be in the picture to win in the playoffs and who knows maybe we can become that dominate team of the decade and win some championships? With the retrash QBs we get from other teams unlikely we will get past a first round playoff game. Now we are going on 20 years past Joe Freaking Montana winning us a playoff game.

I am much butthurt we traded for yet another retread QB that isn't going win us shit in the post season. Alex Smith will be lucky to even make it through 16 games as fragile as he is.

Super Bowl or Bust was the 2005 strategy.

If you have a young QB and you hit, you gradually improve. Even in the years you don't win a SB you are almost always competitive. That removes the embarrassment factor.

Look at the Colts with Manning, the Patriots with Brady, Packers with Rodgers, and so on.

The QB alone will make any team competitive if he's worth his salt. You don't have to hand out Daniel Snyder contracts; you can take a slow, measured approach and still improve markedly with a viable young signal caller: just like the Colts, Redskins, Seahawks, and Bengals have done.

I strongly disagree.

If the Chiefs suck ass this year and draft in the Top Ten, it'll most likely be because of quarterback play.

I hardly think that Reid and Dorsey feel that QB position is insignificant.

Baseball prospects almost always take 3+ years from the day they are drafted to even make a ML debut. From there, it takes several years to reach an All-Star level for even incredibly talented players.

NFL teams can completely turn around a franchise in just three, with immediate turnarounds noticeable in the first year.

Then why not go the Aaron Rodgers/Colin Kaepernick way and try to develop a guy while a veteran makes the team competitive in the short term?
