Chris Ault hired by Kansas City Chiefs as consultant

By Chris Wesseling

Is new Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid preparing for an offensive shift to the Pistol attack that combines the shotgun-spread passing game with a power running game?

Reid isn't going to ditch his cherished West Coast offense, but the early signs suggest he's going to turn to the Pistol as an occasional curveball to throw at defensive coordinators.

The surest sign yet came Monday when the Chiefs imported the godfather of the Pistol offense. Former Nevada coach Chris Ault has agreed to a consultant position with the organization, reported Dan Hinxman of the Reno Gazette-Journal on Monday.

It's an interesting move given Alex Smith ran the spread-option under Urban Meyer at Utah and the Chiefs in March announced that former Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress was hired with the title of "Spread Game Analyst/Special Projects."

The Pistol quarterback lines up four yards behind in the line of scrimmage in a shorter shotgun with a running back behind him or even sidesaddle, as the Washington Redskins did with Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris. It enables the quarterback to take advantage of the read-option and play-action while also allowing for downhill power runs, counters and gaps from the tailback.

"The Pistol is here to stay," Ault declared in January. In a copy-cat league, it's no surprise that the Chiefs plan to take advantage of Smith's athleticism after seeing the success of the Redskins, San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks last season.

What's interesting, though, is that Reid is implementing the change with a quarterback who was kept in a straitjacket by the 49ers coaches. It wasn't until Colin Kaepernick sent Smith to the bench that the 49ers began to revolutionize their offense. If the tea leaves are correct, Smith will have a chance to shed the "game manager" label for the first time in his eight-year career.

Just so I can follow your constant hyperbolic bullshit. You now need a 4.5 to run a pistol offense?

Maybe Ault and Childress are being brought in to help design specific plays that cater to Alex Smith's strengths.

If so, I wholeheartedly endorse it.

If we're going to be running Chan Gailey's offense with Alex Smith playing the role of Ol' Elvis Teeth Thigpen, no thanks.

People will bitch for the sake of bitching.

Ault says a billion times in this article that you do not need a mobile QB to run the pistol. Obviously, Reid agrees that Smith's mobility is adequate to run it.

And by the way, Alex Smith runs a faster 40 than Tyler Thigpen. 4.71 vs. 4.78.

The good news is the offense will be much more creative. However I see this team struggling in the red zone.

IMO the production will match Kyle Ortons when he was a Chief.

Rapoport said Ault will be on both sides of the ball and that he is not moving to KC but will be in and out of training camp.

The pistol is a formation that doesn't require certain physical traits (4.3 speed) to operate out of. There are plays that can require a more talented athlete.

Chiefs add former Nevada head coach as consultant
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
The Chiefs added another offensive specialist to their coaching staff, hiring former University of Nevada coach Chris Ault as a consultant.

Ault is known as a guru of the pistol offensive formation, which features option plays. Colin Kaepernick was among the quarterbacks who played for Ault at Nevada.

Kaepernick eventually replaced Alex Smith at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Smith was traded to the Chiefs over the winter and though he hasn’t been used much as a runner in the NFL, Smith was a dual-threat quarterback in college at Utah.

Ault’s exact duties are unclear but he will be a consultant, which would seem to indicate Ault won’t be a regular at Chiefs headquarters or at practice. But coach Andy Reid has assembled an interesting collection of offensive minds who together should offer the Chiefs some versatility.

“I told Coach Reid, ‘Whatever I can do to help you win a Super Bowl, I’ll do it,’” Ault told the Reno Gazette-Journal on Monday.

“I’m excited to have an opportunity like this. … It’s an opportunity to get a feel for the NFL. (Reid has) hired an experienced staff. The timing is exciting. I’m going to learn an awful lot about the NFL.”

Reid’s teams in Philadelphia, many with Reid calling the plays, were often among the highest scoring teams in the NFL. The Chiefs hired one of Reid’s former coordinators with the Eagles, Brad Childress, who has the unusual title of spread game analyst. Childress does work daily at the Chiefs’ facility and attends practice.

Doug Pederson is the rookie offensive coordinator. Reid will call the plays but some NFL observers believe Pederson, a longtime NFL quarterback, will someday be a head coach.

Now the Chiefs have Ault, in some capacity. The 66-year-old Ault was head coach at Nevada for 28 seasons before retiring at the end of last season.

The Chiefs used the pistol out of necessity in 2008, when injuries to other players forced them to use Tyler Thigpen at quarterback. Thigpen showed in his first few starts that he was uncomfortable in a conventional offense.

Chan Gailey, then the offensive coordinator, reworked the offense in the middle of the season, switching to a version of the pistol. Thigpen thrived in the system.
