I think I need to hire a lawyer for my 16 year old son who got a speeding ticket for going 34 in a 20 school zone.

It is a church school that he didn't realize was a school, and on the description on the ticket, the officer clocked him before he was even 10 feet into the school zone. And he was sitting there waiting for a high school kid, because high school had just let out. I have literally driven down this road over 50,000 times in my life, at all times of day and year, and have never seen cop checking speed in this school zone.

The cop could have seen how nervous my son was, and been understanding about his lack of knowledge of the school, but he wasn't.

So, I need to hire a lawyer, and thought I would ask here first.

If you are not a lawyer, maybe you could recommend someone.

Call the prosecutor and request 'recommendations.'

If your kid has no priors, you can probably get an SIS for some community service time and a non-moving violation. You'll pay a bit more than the fine, it'll stay off the license.

The school-zone part makes it a little tricky; some prosecutors won't budge if you're in school/construction zones.

Tone down the rhetoric.

More related to the topic header, just this week I was driving a couple of car lengths behind a cop as we approached a school zone. As I slowed to the new speed limit the cop sped up [we (ie flow of traffic) were already going about 41 in a 35, he sped up to at least 45 in a 25]. And he wasn't en route to any location as I caught up to him at the next light and he was drinking coffee and chatting on his cell phone.

You should have rolled down your window and yelled at the dumb ass.

honestly, I would just pay the fine. No use going through all this trouble. for what? 14 over? did he hurt anybody? did he lose any points off his license? Is your son okay?

Those are the things you should look at. Paying a fine for 14 over is peanuts. It prolly won't effect his insurance that much. These little tickets are like a little scratch. Absolutely no use worrying about them. No biggie at all.

I'm not making excuses for the thread starter, but insurance premiums are ridiculous for a young male under 25. Of course, I didn't go get a lawyer for him for that ticket. After I chastised him for being dumb in that situation (Yes, I have told him before that if someone is tailgating you don't speed up, you slow down. Plus, he is a target for the cops because he is a teenager), I just told him that he now has to pay me the extra $60 a month for the insurance increase.

I guess your 5 years as a teacher isn't enough experience to help you understand what's going on here. Getting an attorney isn't about shielding his son from responsibility, it's more likely about shielding his own pocketbook. The kid is 16 and presumably the parents are still providing for him to some degree financially. Furthermore, getting an attorney in a situation like this (assuming the school zone doesn't make the attorney impotent) is the way the system works, so if anything, it's teaching his son the way of the world. How is the parent paying higher rates on his insurance going to teach the child something about responsibility?

If there's going to be any lesson in responsibility here, it's going to happen between parent and child, not between the state and the parent. And if the OP statement is correct and the kid honestly didn't even realize that there's a school zone there (even though I'm sure it's posted in some fashion), I'm not sure how much he needs to be hammered to learn this minor lesson.

Lighten up, Francis. It's a speeding ticket, not triple homocide.

In all my life, I've beaten ONE traffic ticket. Do you know how I did it? I brought a lawyer with me who just happened to be a golfing buddy of the judge. Case dismissed.

This is a horrible, corrupt system that preys on all of us. The cop was obviously running a trap - and it's not like junior blew through a crosswalk full of kindergarteners. Even if the kid pays the fine himself, the father will have to pay higher insurance rates, which is the other end of this sick ****ing racket.

I don't have any problem with how you handled it at all, but I'd point out for The Bad Guy's sake (since he's a noob at parenting and all) that the same lesson could be taught to the kid by charging him the $60/month even after paying for a lawyer and saving the family some dough. There's no reason why the insurance company has to be the big winner here.

When my daughter first had her cell phone, she kept going over her minute allowance (her share of our family plan). It wasn't a big deal financially to our family because my wife and I weren't using up our share and we had rollover minutes to absorb the rest, but we had to find a way to impress upon her that she needed to get herself in check. Our solution was to start charging her for the minute overages in months that she went over and then in months following an overage month we'd take her phone from her and only let her have it on weekends and when she was out somewhere where we might need to reach her. After a few cycles, she finally bought into the limits and started making responsible decisions. The point is that we taught her about responsibility without enriching the phone company.

That is my reason for hiring a lawyer. Some people are acting like I wanna go Matlock on the legal system and have a trial.

Paying $500, one time for a lawyer, or an extra $720 a year until he turns 25, seems like an easy choice.
